2008's Previously on Previously on Driveway Cam

Wednesday,
December 31st, 2008 ~ Fast away this old year passes (although it will take 1 second longer to pass this evening) - as did the 29 before it. That's right ~ please join driveway cam in wishing Drew the Happiest of 30th Birthdays!! You don't look a day over 29 Drew ~ really! :) You may have noticed our snow... A little more is on the way, along with more cold, which really is our favorite way to end a year. If you are out and about this New Year's Eve please stay warm and have a good time. We hope for the best of New Years for everyone and we also hope for penguin chicks to appear soon ~ Enjoy tonight's extra leap second (!!) as well as all the views (in 8 minute segments today) here on the driveway and around as the 366th day of 2008 slides towards day 1 of 2009!

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008 ~ Today is the penultimate day of 2008. And, as it turns out, it is the last day before the day which may, or may not, have Drew quaking in his boots, but more on that tomorrow. This last Tuesday of the year is also the birthday of the 'father of seismology' ~ John Milne . In honor of Mr. Milne (and Drew) we are making today's site-o-the-day one of our growing favorites: Heliocorder Cam! Enjoy the views ~

Monday, December 29th, 2008 ~ Sorry for yesterday's misnamed file ~ our viewer reported it (Thank-you Pebble!!) and it did eventually get fixed but not until after 5:30 last night. A calmer day for viewing today (well, actually it's a much more exciting day compared to yesterday's no views of the driveway at all!) on this last Monday of the year (doesn't that sound good?) that has started out a little late so let's get on to it... Enjoy the views ~ (if you have a driveway cam monkey on your back (hey! it's possible) you can check some views from yesterday in the 'driveway earlier today'section)

Sunday, December 28th, 2008 ~ As the house is being shaken around driveway cam, keep an eye out - who knows what will blow by the driveway in these winds! Couple that with the flood warning we're under and it could be an interesting day of viewing. There are good wind watching sites all over the place, just one being on the Webster shore ~ Enjoy the views but hang on to your hats!

Saturday, December 27th, 2008 ~ Today, unfortunately, will be an excellent day for watching the snow melt and run down the driveway as the temperature goes up in the thermometers around these parts. And if that is just too hard to watch....here is a link for making your own snowflakes while we wait for winter to return. (perhaps some penguin themed snowflakes as we are also waiting on those chicks!) Enjoy ~

Friday, December 26th, 2008 ~ Happy Boxing Day! While we find ourselves once again waiting for chicks down in Antarctica, there is also snow to watch all over the place (some views from yesterday in What's the Weather). And Santa brought driveway cam a new link to replace Mole Rat Cam which an eagle eyed viewer noticed was no longer working! (sorry about that, and thanks for the tip Bman!). Enjoy ~

Thursday, December 25th, 2008 ~ A very Merry Christmas and Happy Viewing to all ~ from everyone on this side of driveway cam

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008 ~ Christmas Eve is here and with it the warmer temperatures, W I N D and rain are arriving too ....along with Santa! NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) is once again tracking Santa just click the link and you can follow along (as he blows through town tonight on the 40+ mph winds that are on their way) ~ Have a fun Christmas Eve and enjoy the views ~

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008 ~ Oops ~ forgot to update yesterday's blurb...but the camera was running (1 out of 2 isn't too bad). We heard tales of meteor sightings! That helps make up for our cloudy skies here. And while the hustle and bustle kicks in today full time (I can hear the gasps as you realize you haven't been at warp speed yet) enjoy it all and take a few minutes out when you can (or need to) to enjoy the views too ~

Sunday, December 21st, 2008 ~ The Winter Solstice has arrived!!! And has brought with it not only winter, but rumors of a blowing snow storm too. So fire up the mulled wine, and enjoy the views ~ However, please note: we do not recommend taking your computer with you while out solsticing or dancing around a fire.

Saturday, December 20th, 2008 ~ We here at Driveway Cam, well most of us here, are *VERY* excited about the snow! There could be little more of it today to celebrate teetering on the brink of the solstice ~ accompanied with lots of running around (where 'lots' = more than 1 trip into or out of the driveway)(peppermint tea will help with the head rush this could cause). Enjoy all the views everywhere on this last Saturday of the year ~

Friday, December 19th, 2008 ~ Two Words People: Plowable Snow!!! What better way to spend the anniversary of the publishing of A Christmas Carol than with snow fall rumors of up to 1 inch an hour?!?!??!?! It's the perfect day to get some and try some or and then gather . (It's also the anniversary of the day in 1941 that the Office of Censorship was created by )

Thursday, December 18th, 2008 ~ A quiet day here on the driveway ~ perfect for putting on The Nutcracker (which premiered today back in 1892. According to rumors, Tchaikovsky, on a trip to America, sent a postcard to Russia from a train station in Utica, New York. The postcard says, in Russian, “Visions of sugar plums are dancing in my head.” This was before he wrote The Nutcracker), making some peppermint tea and watching snow on mountains, or looking for any penguin chicks which may or may not have arrived down in Antarctica. (Let us know if you spot one) Enjoy the views ~ (and/or all your running around, in case the quiet of the driveway isn't contagious!)

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008 ~ Happy Birthday Haydon!!! Have a G R E A T day!!!!! [A note to the rest of the world - Haydon is now of driving age so pack up the babies and grab the old ladies and get everyone off the road!] In honor of Haydon's birthday we have some snow for your viewing pleasure, as does any number of the other locations out there, and they're viewable without even having to put on your coat or hat. Enjoy ~

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008 ~ Pinkies Up! Today, members of Jane Austen Societies all over the world are celebrating her birthday with a tea or luncheon. Even if you are not a Janeite it's an excellent day to brew a pot of tea to celebrate that glorious soirée Sam Adams and the Sons of Liberty hosted (just 2 years before Ms. Austin was born) ~ The Boston Tea Party!! (does leave us a bit concerned about what might happen when the governor of NY officially presents his budget today which includes, among others, a new Obesity Tax. Not sure what might go into the harbor tonight...!)

Monday, December 15th, 2008 ~ "Stand before the people you fear and speak your mind - even if your voice shakes. When you least expect it, someone may actually listen to what you have to say." Maggie Kuhn. And today is the perfect time to speak your mind ~ even if your voice shakes ~ to celebrate the 217th Anniversary of the Bill of Rights becoming law. When not speaking up, or out, enjoy watching the various weather systems move in across the country and across your favorite views (and make sure you know where your hat, scarf and mittens are!)

Sunday, December 14th, 2008 ~ Happy Birthday Adam!!!!! Have a great day, a great year ahead and a lot of cake and ice-cream!!!! To celebrate Adam's birthday there is snow (and ice) all over the place to watch, pictures of it in places it shouldn't be, there are penguin chicks to wait for, there is Santa to watch, Christmas Goats to check in on, fairs in Germany and even a new trial link (Thanks Bman!) In other words if you get a moment it's a great day for link hopping! Enjoy the views ~

Saturday, December 13th, 2008 ~ Hope everyone got to see the full moon last night - it cleared up here a bit after 9 so we caught a few glimpses of it even through the clouds. Heard tell of planned Mulled Wine & Meteor Watching this evening which sounds like the perfect combination (ed note - hot toddies work well too for late night winter sky watching, but aren't as mellifluous!) Pictures posted here of the Snow in New Orleans from our on-the-spot reporter (and dedicated viewer Catherine)(Thanks Catherine!!!) It's a big weekend of running around all over, while in Sweden the Christmas Goat worries about surviving the weekend according to his blog (!?)Enjoy the running and of course the views ~

Friday, December 12th, 2008 ~ Today's driveway is brought to you by the letter "S" ~ which was the very first wireless transmission to cross the Atlantic on this date back in 1901 much to the surprise of some of Marconi's peers who said it couldn't happen because radio waves couldn't follow the curvature of the earth. And while they were sort of correct, that plucky letter S sent from England was received almost 2000 miles away in Newfoundland! If you are singing in a concert tonight be of Good Voice ~ we wish we could be there in person but we are certainly there in spirit. If you are home from school for the holidays be of Good Cheer ~ continue to enjoy your break. And if you are still in school or at work like we are then rejoice ~ for tonight is the biggest brightest full moon of the year and it's the weekend! Cookie baking time is near, there is snow all over the place in views far and wide, and in places that don't usually have snow, and things are hopping at the North Pole, inside and out, too!

Thursday, December 11th, 2008 ~ A quiet day for watching the driveway. And for waiting on the penguin chicks. And speaking of waiting... it was on this day an unbelievable 36 (!!!) years ago that the last men (to date) landed on the Moon. Apollo 17 touched down on December 11, 1972 and Eugene Cernan and Harrison H. Schmitt began the last manned exploration of the lunar surface. Schmitt, who is a geologist, is the only trained scientist to have visited the Moon so far ~ and Cernan still holds the distinction of being the last man to have walked on the Moon. (and may I just say that some of us still cannot comprehend how that is possible, are still pouting over it and want to know what the heck happened). Enjoy the views ~

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008 ~ It's Nobel Prize day today ~ as well as the birthday of Emily Dickinson. So we can have our cake and watch the ceremony too! Watch live from Stockholm, from 10:30 - Noon (eastern)(if my CET time zone figuring is correct!). As well as watching the sleet on the driveway which has now turned to snow, the Christmas Goat, the Penguins, or any of the other views being broadcast out there, via links right here. And did anyone else notice it seemed to be a shaky day yesterday on the old Heliocorder Cam? :)

click picture for larger view

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008 ~ Today may become tree day here at the home of Driveway Cam ~ it is also the day that Alfred Lord Tennyson's Charge of the Light Brigade was published, back in 1854 (one of knitting's most famous poems !?!). And it is also the day that brings the return of Christmas Goat Cam ~ you know, you may just need a cup of warm milk while viewing today. Enjoy ~

Monday, December 8th, 2008 ~ Humor is emotional chaos remembered in tranquility ~ James Thurber born December 8, 1894

Sunday, December 7th, 2008 ~ Today is the anniversary of Delaware becoming the very first colony to ratify the US Constitution, and therefore becoming the very first of the United States. Which of course makes this a perfect day to look in on Delaware and see how they're doing now that they are 221 years old ~ you can watch for seagulls, view an inlet or even watch a boardwalk(!) (okay, so it isn't a board walking.... but it's just as fun to watch). And as a bonus ~ there is snow blowing on by the driveway! Enjoy the views ~

Saturday, December 6th, 2008 ~ A very Happy Birthday to Christopher today!!!!!! We all hope it's a great day (and year) for you Chris ~
Slightly before Christopher made his appearance, but oh so fitting in the scheme of things, the Encyclopædia Britannica made it's debut, when on this date back in 1768 the very first volume of the first set was published. Makes sense doesn't it? :)

Friday, December 5th, 2008 ~ Busy day on the driveway today, why there must be at least 4 trips out and back in the works! Don't worry if that seems like simply too much to keep up with, the mountains, rocks, and moss are always out there waiting to be viewed. And if all of that still leaves you uncertain about how to justify some cake and ice-cream today (not that it needs any justification mind you) then start the party because today is the birthday of Walt Disney, Calvin Trillion , and, at least we're fairly certain it is, Werner Heisenberg! ~ Enjoy the views ~

Thursday, December 4th, 2008 ~ Wind and rain and eventually snow are all supposed to visit the driveway today ~ and we've saved you a front row seat for this first Thursday in December! There is weather to watch all over the place and a Christmas Fair going on in Rothenburg, Germany if you are looking for additional festivities to watch ~ Enjoy the views ~

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008 ~ Voting for the Atlanta Panda Cub's name ends today at 4:00. You can vote here for your favorite choice. (They'll announce the name on December 8th) Meanwhile, they are still mumbling about snow here over the weekend but today is supposed to be on the mild side. Mild on the driveway works for viewing, gives us a chance to watch the storm front move across the country. Or for a chance to watch the country move, check out Earthquake Central and of course the ever popular and fascinating Heliocorder Cam ~

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008 ~ Happy Birthday Amy!!! Hope it's a wonderful day for you! Here's to ice cream and cake all around ~ And fingers crossed there will be snow in your honor today. To help keep up with Snow season a few changes....the Vermont Bird feeder has moved to the retired links page (where you can still check out all the blue jays that visit there!) and the weather cam there is taking it's place for a while here ~ And for all things measurable regarding snow (almost everything you could want to know) we'll keep the National Snow Analyses link available - click on the link in the date above - but for some general snow and frost pictures and information, try this link.

Monday, December 1st, 2008 ~ December! It's here!!! Rumors of approaching snow later in the week but for now a quiet day on the driveway, and there are eggs in Antarctica (which could be, in some small way, possible because it became a military free continent 49 years ago today)(well, it could), the Shuttle is back home safe and sound, and, best of all perhaps, tonight is a good night for sky watching: "When the sun goes down tonight, step outside and look south. Beaming through the twilight is one of the prettiest things you'll ever see--a tight three-way conjunction of Venus, Jupiter and the crescent Moon. The event is visible from all parts of the world, even from light-polluted cities. Only cloudy weather or a midnight sun (sorry Antarctica!) can spoil the show." (from www.spaceweather.com) Enjoy the views ~

Sunday, November 30th, 2008 ~ Last day of November here on the driveway, and no doubt where you are too. Enjoy the views along with your leftovers (which are dwindling but still so delicious) ... and if you are all out of them, wait ~ how could any of us be out of leftovers?

Saturday, November 29th, 2008 ~ Lots of birthday wishes today and for the whole year ahead for Cheryl and Mary Q ~ with a special visit of the birthday sheep just for them! You might want to take a break from leftovers (calm down, we're not suggesting a long break) to catch up on some reading in honor of Cheryl and Mary because they just might have reached the age C.S. Lewis meant when he said, "Some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again." There is an old archived special birthday page for today, a new quiz and a new trial link! Enjoy ~

Friday, November 28th, 2008 ~ The Shuttle undocks today (in about 10 minutes! (some of us overslept today)) and they'll be on their way home. For those of you already home, or who aren't out on the road today enjoy the views ~ there is a little something here for everyone ...

Thursday, November 27th, 2008 ~ Happy Thanksgiving! Enjoy the food, family, football, and floaters (ie balloons in Macy's parade) and don't forget to save room for the pie(s) ~

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008 ~ Some snow, some wind, some rain and the busiest day of the year on the driveway! In 10 minute vignettes, just for you ~ okay so maybe it's not the busiest day of the year here, but it is at Wegmans which will be made busier by the fact that soon I'll be out there too. Hope this Thanksgiving Eve is a good one for everyone - and let the baking begin!! For all of you traveling please watch the roads, and safe journeys and for everyone.... enjoy the views through whatever windows you watch today ~

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008 ~ A cloudy and damp day is in store for the driveway which means it might be a good day to catch up on all your other favorite views out there. The baby panda is adorable - if you haven't voted for a name yet, you have until Dec. 3rd. Things are busy at bambi cam on and off during the day (got my first buck there last week). There is snow falling (manmade and otherwise), there are mountains eroding, chickens running around in the rain, the iced-in contest in Maine is underway (have to hurry, you only have until Dec. 1st to enter), heliocorders to watch (has any one seen them change the paper yet?), and people wending their way right now to go get in line at the county clerks offices in Jefferson County! (and of course it's always fun to watch wending!) So settle in, and enjoy the views ~

Monday, November 24th, 2008 ~ Last week in November is underway, as is the run to Thanksgiving ~ you can watch them both right here while we all contemplate our relatives since it was back in 1859 on this date that Darwin's Origin of the Species was published. And throw in some extra contemplation for Cole, one of our tool using, motorcycle riding, featherless, biped relatives, since he is turning 56 today. Happy Birthday Cole! ps ~

Click picture for larger views of the new penguin camera put in place yesterday, with a whole new angle on our favorite flightless bipeds! :)

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008 ~ Besides being the 45th anniversary of the debut of "Dr. Who" (feeling old?) this is also the 111th anniversary of the patent (U.S. Patent # 594,114) for the portable pencil sharpener (where the shavings stay inside the sharpener) and the 109th anniversary of the debut of 1st jukebox (Palais Royale Saloon, San Francisco) ~ and music, kindergarten and television sci-fi have never been the same! The forecasted snow did not arrive, as forecasted snows are wont to do, but the driveway did get it's boundaries defined should plowing ever have to occur (you may have to squint to see them, but they are there...(there are 2 on each side and they are very, very thin markers)) But don't squint, just enjoy the views ~

Click pictures for larger views and less squinting

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008 ~ It was a cold and snowy day...there should be some snow plowing today on the driveway (every 3" according to the contract and 5" is in the forecast), and/or on the lawn as there are no 'side of the driveway' edge sticks this year (!*) and with the first of the many Thanksgiving runs to the grocery store and general running about the driveway should be hopping* today. * Hopping, like time, is all relative.

Friday, November 21st, 2008 ~ If you woke up today thinking it was Saturday please accept our apologies and note, yesterday wasn't really Friday as stated here on Driveway Cam. Today however, really is and that is cause always for great celebration! The fact that no one pointed that out either means you are all as confused as we are, or, well the implications are too much to think about so on with the viewing!

Friday, November 20th, 2008 ~ Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! (and a very Happy 325th day of the year to us all)

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008 ~ Snow! Just a few flakes today but we love it here on both sides of driveway cam ~ Today is the 145th anniversary of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, (with a link to an collection of performances of the speech; one of them especially for our good friend Pat, who we love even though her taste in music is suspect!) And a couple of links to photos of Lincoln, at Gettysburg ~ this the only authenticated, known picture in the Library Of Congress and the more recently found but not yet authenticated picture... here

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008 ~ A little more snow on and off the driveway today. :) And when you aren't watching the snow fall to the ground today - check out the sky and information on the shuttle mission in progress ...and have some birthday cake and ice-cream for Alan Shepard ~ first American in space, and for Margaret Atwood a favorite poet and novelist 'round the driveway, and last (alphabetically by first name) but certainly not least, Mickey Mouse who, in his debut role of Steamboat Willie, officially turns 80 today!! Looking up or down enjoy the views ~

Monday, November 17th, 2008 ~ At last! Snow that is viewable on driveway cam as it falls ~ we couldn't be happier!!!!! Add to it that (from Writer's Almanac) "It was on this day in 1558 that Queen Elizabeth I acceded to the English throne. She reigned for 45 years. She took over after the death of her sister, Queen Mary, and so Edmund Spenser, Christopher Marlowe, and William Shakespeare are known as Elizabethan authors, and not Maryan authors." And it couldn't be a better day for surfing or viewing. And on a Monday!! Enjoy the views ~

Sunday, November 16th, 2008 ~ Moving Day for the divine Ms. Em ~ fingers crossed that the "blustery flurries" predicted don't cause too many problems for her and all the moving crew. Flurries here on the driveway may not mean flurries in the city and while there isn't a moving cam (but wouldn't that be amusing?) you can check out what the weather is in her general area by clicking here . Enjoy the views and enjoy (along with me) the fact that we aren't the ones carrying all those boxes down 2 flights, then up 2 flights............ :)

Saturday, November 15th, 2008 ~ The 320th day of the year looks to be a bit damp. The liquid falling from the sky currently is rumored to be turning into more of a powder later on as the temperatures fall with it. But that won't throw a wet blanket on the fact that today is America Recycles Day! It's also the day (in 1806) that Zebulon Pike spotted the mountain that we know (and watch (see table below) of course) today as... Pikes Peak. The icing on the cake of today is that it's Petula Clark's birthday, so forget all your troubles, forget all your cares, and view Downtown ~ everything's waiting for you ~

Friday, November 14th, 2008 ~ A little more cleanup on driveway cam today ~ with snow season approaching, turtle cam is taking a well deserved break from the frantic pace of the table-of-links (not to worry, the link is now on the retired links page) and Cedar Point Amusement Park Cam is out of retirement and back in the table! We may have missed their first snowfall of the season but if anyone can appreciate and enjoy the thrill of watching for snow in a closed amusement park, online, it would be, of course, the intrepid band of driveway cam viewers ~ so grab some popcorn and settle in ~

Thursday, November 13th, 2008 ~ A very Happy Birthday to Grandma Scorse today!!!!! While she's not a regular at drivewaycam we know our viewers join us in wishing her a great day, a great year ahead and also join us in finding cake and ice-cream to have in her honor! :) Enjoy the views ~

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008 ~ Eagle eyed viewers may notice visitors from the south gracing the driveway on and off today ~ And with several trips planned in and out of the driveway today as well, it could be a record day of viewing! Pace yourselves.

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008 ~ If you are off for Veteran's Day today you have plenty of time to catch up on your napping and your viewing, of course ~ (we try to help with both here) First, a little housekeeping ~ we found the new link for the Jefferson County Court Clerks offices and so that action has returned! Our hopes for the return of Greenhouse Cam are fading so for now the stellar Heliocorder Cam is in it's place. There is a new trial cam to check out and be sure to vote on a name for the new panda cub by December 3rd. Enjoy the views ~ and the naps!

Monday, November 10th, 2008 ~ Welcome to Monday on the driveway. Please put your monitors in an upright position, fasten your seat belt snuggly across your lap, then sit back and enjoy the views as the week takes off. You'll find, in the seatback in front of you, a retro page to a Special Birthday today, in addition to all of the current views. We know you have options when it comes to driveways and we appreciate you choosing drivewaycam for your viewing today.

Sunday, November 9th, 2008 ~ 19 years ago today East Germany opened the Berlin Wall and for the first time since 1961 East Germans could cross freely into West Germany. It was 108 years ago that Teddy Roosevelt set off for Panama on the first trip to a foreign country by a U.S. president. To celebrate both, updates are every 9 minutes on this sunny (so far) Sunday on the driveway. Enjoy the views ~ ( ps. The Panama Canal cam was on the blink this morning hence the rather static, but oh so drivewaycam in essence, view of Teddy )

Saturday, November 8th, 2008 ~ Today is the anniversary of Montana (one of driveway cams favorite states for viewing) becoming the 41st state back in 1889! There are sites a'plenty for watching Montana ~ our standard links for traffic cams, and Elk cams, both in the table below, are always good. And here are some others for some additional big sky country watching: Lost Creek, Missoula, Fort Peck Dam Cam, Glacier Airport (loads slowly) and Fire Tower Cam and the new Mammoth Hot Springs Cam (link from the Old Faithful page)(okay, not technically in Montana, but you can see it from there!). And a bonus view today of some elk passing by the Mammoth Hot Springs cam just a few minutes ago! (which is going in the collection)

Friday, November 7th, 2008 ~ Finally, it's Friday! Hang on because the weekend is coming and you can watch it get here in 10 minute increments on the driveway ~ In case you are wanting a reason for cake and ice cream (it being Friday covers it here) today is the birthday of Albert Camus, Joni Mitchell and Billy Graham (and wouldn't that make for an interesting guest list at a birthday party?) There is snow to watch out west, and an updated traffic cam site in Montana to boot. So whatever you watch today, enjoy the views ~

Thursday, November 6th, 2008 ~ Big weather front is moving through the country and that always means an interesting view! Enjoy the higher temperatures if you have them now for they'll be falling soon, you can put money on it. Speaking of which, it's the birthday of the person who got us hooked on watching ups and downs ~ Charles Dow ~ who published the first industrial stock average back in May, 1896. That first average was 40.94. It declined gradually, and on August 8, 1896, stood at 28.48 which is the lowest point on record for the industrial average ever..... well, we hope! :) Enjoy the views ~

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008 ~ In the precinct I worked at yesterday we had 78.00875273522976(!!!) percent of the registered voters turn out to vote. We were hoping for 80% and were very excited at how close we came.(almost scared away voter #700 with our whooping and applause) And in honor of the country who made yesterday's election possible we'd like to remind everyone to: Remember Remember the Fifth of November... and let's be careful 'round those bonfires people! You can keep an eye on Parliament today here ~

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 ~ You know the drill: Vote early, Vote often. I'll put this up on the site tonight (it's still Monday) because I'm not sure I'll remember to do it in the morning (have to leave here around 5:00 ~ AM ~ to be sure the polls are open at 6:00 ~ still wondering what the heck the founding fathers were thinking of with that little joke!). Be sure to vote if for no other reason than to end the commercials.... Enjoy the views and the election process, no matter who you support ~ it's us at our finest (or sincerely trying to be).

Monday, November 3rd, 2008 ~ Today is the 1 year anniversary of driveway cam getting it's own domain ~ and (as if that weren't enough) it's the 78th anniversary of the opening of the 1st vehicular tunnel connecting 2 countries. There is some (online anyway) discussion on the exact date...as the Detroit Windsor Tunnel was actually dedicated on November 1st. But in any case it is still "the only vehicular international subaqueous border crossing in the world"!!! And has 2 great webcams to watch cars go to Canada and/or watch cars come back! Rarely gets better than that eh?

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008 ~ Frost on the pumpkins this morning to celebrate the return to daylight savings time (well, it's possible). And of course to celebrate Daniel Boone's birthday! Have a good Sunday tromping around in your coonskin caps but be home before dark ~ which 'round these parts comes at 5:01 today ~ to find out when the sun sets where you are, try this link. (ps - don't forget there is a new quiz.....)

Saturday, November 1st, 2008 ~ And just like that it's welcome to November and All Saint's Day ~ on the driveway and maybe even where you are too! There is a new quiz for the new month as well as a new trial site (!) and the Halloween pictures are here (also via the link on family pages), we'd love to have yours to add to them! Enjoy the views ~

Friday, October 31st, 2008 ~ HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!!!! Hope it's a good one for everyone and that it doesn't stir up anyone's ailurophobia, nyctophobia, wiccaphobia or coimetrophobia! And if you are simply samhainophobic ~ just hang on, pull the blankets over your head and count to 86,400 (the number of seconds until it's over for another year) For those of you who do not suffer from ghoulaphobia : (okay, Emily may have made that one up) Here is a link to watch the very first of the now well over 100 Frankenstein movies ever made ~ it was produced by Thomas Edison in 1910. Enjoy it and all the views today, from the driveway or from under your bed!!! Boo!

Thursday, October 30th, 2008 ~ One last link to the extremepumpkins site and, on this Halloween Eve, a link to a page of ghastly jokes you won't want to miss! And speaking of missing... if you didn't check in yesterday you didn't get to see drivewaycam's first snow-on-the-ground of the season!

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008 ~ Still no pumpkins here so we'll keep the extremepumpkins link in place to motivate us all. The coyqueen celebrated National Chocolate Day yesterday online ~ looked like this (in case you missed it).

Enjoy the views today (and any left over chocolate you might have)(wait, leftover chocolate?? what the heck is that?)

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008 ~ Hope you have your pumpkins already ~ we here at drivewaycam do not, yet. But we're working on it. If you could use some inspiration too, or some carving ideas, check out extremepumpkins and wander through the pictures there. You'll love it! October 28th has been a busy day in history, it was on this day: in 1886 that the Statue of Liberty was dedicated, in 1904 that policemen in St Louis first used fingerprints in an investigation, and in 1965, also in St. Louis, that the Gateway Arch was completed there. To top it all off it's also National Chocolate Day! Be sure to celebrate today in any delicious way you can think of. There will be lots of wind and rain here to watch so enjoy some views with your chocolate too ~

Monday, October 27th, 2008 ~ Running way behind today! So, first a quick Happy Anniversary to Karen and Bob!!! (is it 33 years this year?) And a quick Happy Birthday to the New York Subway System (1904), Dylan Thomas (1914), Sylvia Plath (1932), and Anthony Doerr(1973) ~ Enjoy the shortened but none the less sincere (?) views of the driveway today ~

Sunday, October 26th, 2008 ~ Looks like a good day for leaf peeping (if drivewaycam is to be beleaved(!)(sorry), and why would it not?). And an excellent day for taking your most stubborn friend or relative to lunch because it is, after all, National Mule Day! Which makes perfect sense since it's also the anniversary of the opening of the Erie Canal back in 1825. (admit it, the song just popped into your head didn't it?). From Writers Almanac: "When the canal was finished, cannons were lined up along the towpath just barely in earshot of each other. They fired one after another from Lake Erie to New York City, finishing the relay in 81 minutes". If you are short on mules in your area you can always check out ours here. (okay, so it's actually 1/2 Mule Cam but it's all we have)

Saturday, October 25th, 2008 ~ It's a lovely rainy autumn day on the driveway, perfect for some indoor viewing of the outdoors, and maybe even some reading, apple cider, donuts and a nap! Enjoy ~

Friday, October 24th, 2008 ~ Today marks the 63rd anniversary of the world trying to get a little closer together as the U.N. charter came into effect. And the 5th anniversary of the world getting farther apart with the last commercial flight of The Concorde. Three Concordes landed at Heathrow airport in rapid succession just after 4pm, the flight from New York being the last to touchdown.

from the longford site

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008 ~ You've waited for it all week ... and it's finally here.... that's right, it's Thursday on the driveway! It's also, I am loathe to say, the 50th anniversary of the appearance of (insert shudder here) The Smurfs. Hard to believe, (but easy to imagine their responsibility somehow in the current world financial crisis) they debuted, in all their blueness, 50 years ago today. (a second shudder may be in order here) Enjoy the views and watch out for little half naked blue things running amok today while they celebrate.

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008 ~ Enjoy the views on this somewhat blustery Wednesday ~ it's Doris Lessing's birthday today, born in (then) Persia in 1919 she won the Nobel Prize for literature last year. And the odd fact du jour: It was on this day, in 1981, the U.S. national debt crossed the $1 trillion mark for the first time. It clicked on past $10 trillion 14 days ago and is still humming (?) along. To check it out you can go to Times Square (although that clock seems to have run out of numbers), or check on it online , although why waste a perfectly good viewing day by depressing yourself? The penguins are soooo much cuter than the national debt! [If you want the government skinny on the debt check here and the summary debt information for September is here. And if that doesn't scratch your debt itch you can see the detail report for September right here .]

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008 ~ Our first snow flakes of the season are rumored to be showing up this evening! And in honor of the continuation of Freedom of Speech Week we'd like to say "YEEEEEEEEE HA!!!!!!" to that. :) Today is also the 129th anniversary of when Thomas Alva Edison, at 1:30 in the morning on this day in 1879, hooked a carbon filament up to an electric circuit and it glowed from 1:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. the following afternoon. Which of course makes it the perfect day to check in with the world's longest burning light bulb, now in it's 107th year ~ Enjoy ~

Monday, October 20th, 2008 ~ Today is the start of Freedom of Speech Week so if you have something to say then by all means get it said this week! If you need a soap box give us a call ~ we have a couple extra.(click logo for first amendment)

Sunday, October 19th, 2008 ~ Rumor has it the driveway is in for a sunny day ~ good for leaf peeping here and hopefully where you are too. So when you aren't checking in on the driveway get out there and kick a few leaves around ~ they're waiting for you!

Saturday, October 18th, 2008 ~ Enjoy all the beauty and the splendor(?) of the driveway and it's surrounding views today (after all, from here the pyramids are just as close as the penguins or the Mississippi river (it's quite the central location even if it's not on a bus line)), and whatever your weather enjoy this lovely autumn day ~

Friday, October 17th, 2008 ~ If you haven't been out wandering the links recently, give it a try, it's a good time for it.....there is snow out west, beautiful leaves all over, the new baby panda down south, penguins even farther south, snow on the deck at Mt. Washington, plants growing at the coy queen's house, deer and other wildlife on bambi cam and the goats are hanging out on chicken cam (making all those cute little goat noises they make). And if anyone knows the new location of the Jefferson County Clerk's waiting room cams link please, oh please, let us know! Enjoy the views ~

Thursday, October 16th, 2008 ~ A very Happy Birthday to Donna today ~ Hope it's the start of a great year for you, full of felting and fun!! And on top of that a very Merry Feral Cat Day to us all! This calls for cake, ice cream, and Purina around ~ (from www.ebbemunk.dk/alice/alice2.html)

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008 ~ There is a new Trial Link today as we hit the middle day of the middle week of October. We hate to see parking lot cam retired, but there are so many views to review and just so much time. Throw in the new angle on CoyCam to go with the new angle of the driveway, and you're going to have to be careful you don't become mesmerized! Enjoy the views ~

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 ~ Today is the birthday of both e.e.cummings and d.d.eisenhower ~ to hear either one of them just click on their names. (you have to love the internet don't you?) There is a slightly new view of the driveway to include some localized leaf peeping, and don't forget that tonight is the full moon ~ so when you done enjoying the views get out there and howl.

Monday, October 13th, 2008 ~ Happy (Celebrated, but really the day after) Columbus Day! Get some cider and donuts and enjoy the views. And just in case you haven't been out to see the new panda cub in Atlanta yet, you should. Panda Cam is up and running 24/7 for a while and once you start watching it's very hard to stop (regular panda viewing hours return December 8th when they name him).

Sunday, October 12th, 2008 ~ HARD TO BELIEVE, ON SUCH A BEAUTIFUL DAY, BUT IT'S INTERNATIONAL MOMENT OF FRUSTRATION SCREAM DAY ! [ INSERT YOUR SCREAM HERE..... ] and it's also Columbus Day [which requires less yelling]. 'Round these parts it is *Clean Up the Flower Beds Day as well. (*not an official holiday, and certainly not one with much dancing associated with it, thou it does, usually, involve much more yelling than either of the aforementioned days). However you spend your day take some time to enjoy the views ~

Saturday, October 11th, 2008 ~ Looks like a beautiful October Saturday here on the driveway ~ hope it is where you are too! And if it's not don't dismay, there are lots of great sites right here to enjoy so you can sit back and wander the links ~

Friday, October 10th, 2008 ~ Hey it's Friday!! It's World Mental Health Day today (which got here in the nick of time is my thought) *AND* it's National Cake Decorating Day and my guess is doing the latter can only help with the former. The other thing that could help the world's mental health is to quit watching the stock market for a while and instead check out any of the views here on drivewaycam, or get out there and buy a pumpkin and kick some leaves around. If you can't get out, you can at least take a leaf peeping break here. Just take some time today to enjoy some alternative views to those currently dominating the media

Thursday, October 9th, 2008 ~ Welcome to the downhill side of the run to the weekend. We are in the midst of World Blindness Awareness Month and today (as it turns out) is World Sight Day! So whether you are inside or outside, on or off line, take a look around and go get your eyes examined! It's penguin season after all and we don't want anyone to miss seeing any of that (even Drivewaycam will be getting it's eye dusted today) Enjoy the views ~

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008 ~ Since 1976 there has been a National Metric Week (who knew?) and since 1983 National Metric Week has been held in October (the 10th month) in the week of the 10th of that month ~ so hang on to your rulers everyone 'cause we are smack dab in the middle of NATIONAL METRIC WEEK!!!!!! YEEE HA! [editor's note: Well sort of.... a metric week must have 10 days in it, right?, which means that, if we say the week started on Monday, we are actually only 3/10ths of the way through the week (that is to say we are in the 3rd decaweek)(4th decaweek if your week starts on Sunday) and therefore we are actually 2 decaweeks (or 1 decaweek with the Sunday adjustment) short of a smack dab.][which still adds up to: Party On!]

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008 ~ As we all now know October is a very busy month! It's hard to keep up with it all ~ but today we are going for celebrating National Carry a Tune Week, which started yesterday but all the Mad Hatter parties got in the way!?! (go ahead, click that link and/or google it, I don't make this stuff up) The gist of this week is (apparently) to "encourage people to recall tunes from their past and carry them as fond memories, like treasured old photographs". So sing out your favorite tune and encourage everyone you see to do the same ~ and best of all is that you can carry a tune while you are enjoying the views ~

Monday, October 6th, 2008 ~ Happy Mad Hatter's Day!!! Based loosely on the price tag on the Mad Hatter's Hat here in this country we celebrate on October 6th (while in England the party starts on June 10th, how silly is that?). And what do people do on Mad Hatter's Day? Well according to that web site " In general, we celebrate silliness. But what if your work involves something inherently silly -- say marketing, where you put on a three-piece suit (five or six layers of fabric) in the summertime, tie a piece of cloth around your neck to restrict blood flow to the brain, and set about trying to convince people to buy things they don't want and can't afford because this will give the country a Healthy Economy? In this case, doing something absolutely sane will have a more startling effect than you can possibly imagine. " So put on your hats people and get silly ~

Sunday, October 5th, 2008 ~ Should be a lovely viewing day here on the driveway, with, what looks to be at the moment, lots of (according to the weather report) limited sunshine(?). Which, apparently, isn't partly cloudy, or partly sunny but simply limited. It's a complicated science. It looks like limited sunshine down in Antarctica too however the penguins don't seem to mind ~

Saturday, October 4th, 2008 ~ Saturday, in the park, I think it was the 4th of... hey wait, it IS the 4th of October! And, it's the start of World Space Week!!! Which, as declared by the United Nations General Assembly is "To celebrate each year at the international level the contributions of space science and technology to the betterment of the human condition" So be sure to get out there and explore and celebrate. And a little closer to home than perhaps the edge of the universe, the penguins were out exploring their space too yesterday. (And were dressed in their finest for the festivities) ~ Enjoy the views ~

Friday, October 3rd, 2008 ~ All driveway, all day! On this side of the camera today we are celebrating the 53rd anniversary of the premiere of the Captain Kangaroo Show, and we're doing it with our ears on because the Mickey Mouse Club also premiered on that very same day in 1955! (in fact, 10/3 seems to be a good day for TV premiers as the year before (1954) Father Knows Best premiered, and then in 1961 Mr Ed and The Dick Van Dyke show both made their debuts, also on 10/3!) Hmmmm, wonder if there is a classic starting today?

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008 ~ Running late - just time for a few quick views of the driveway this morning and a reminder that, in honor of Mahatma Gandhi's birthday today, it is World Farm Animals Day (told you October was busy!). When you aren't out protesting today...enjoy the views ~

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008 ~ It's October!!! It's a busy busy busy month (click that link to see just how busy, you won't believe it), and it starts out with a bang. Today is (among other things) .... Balloons Around the World Day, Child Health Day, Fire Pup Day, International Day of Older Persons, and last but certainly not least it's World Vegetarian Day (take a rutabaga to lunch day?). Surf with abandon and enjoy the views ~

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008 ~ Thus endeth September. The PC is off to a 3 day meeting so only morning updates of the driveway. But with a new baby panda, penguins wandering back, and leaves to peep it's just as well ~ there just aren't enough hours in the day for all the viewing to be done. Have you heard of Twitter? Well drivewaycam has an account there ~ if you do too (or you want to sign up) stop by and say howdy! We'll leave the light on......

Monday, September 29th, 2008 ~ It's still September as this week begins ~ and it's the 179th anniversary of the first London Bobbies hitting the streets (originally known as "Peelers", both nicknames based on Sir Robert Peel who created the police force). It should also be a good day for leaf peeping at least online if not where you are. But please peep in an orderly fashion ~ wouldn't want the constabulary getting after any of you!

Sunday, September 28th, 2008 ~ The flock of birthday sheep are here to wish Catherine a Fabulous 50th Birthday today!!!!! We all wish you the best of years ahead and a wonderful day today. Everyone in the tri-cam area will be enjoying some birthday cake and ice-cream in your honor and we all hope you enjoy some too ~ and don't forget to enjoy each and every one of the candles on that cake. You earned them!! Enjoy ~

Saturday, September 27th, 2008 ~ Happy Anniversary to Karen and Bob, Happy 10th Birthday to Google, and Happy LSOS (Last Saturday in September) to us all. Hope it's a good day all around. New quiz today so if you are stuck inside and so forced to wander the world electronically... you might want to google it out. Enjoy ~

Friday, September 26th, 2008 ~ A very Happy Friday to all! Enjoy the views on this last weekend of September!!

Thursday, September 25th, 2008 ~ Another sunny day rolls down the driveway, in honor of the birthdays of Uncle Al (Happy Birthday Uncle Al!!!) and William Faulkner today. And that sunshine will be rolling down the driveway for exactly 12 hours here, and exactly 12 in Cincinnati too (tho an ever so slightly different 12 than ours). Meanwhile Louisville and Ashland both get an additional minute of daylight today, and it will be daylight for 12 hrs and 2 minutes in Atlanta! You can check out your daylight times here or of course by looking out your windows ~
:)

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008 ~ Looks like it's going to be a lovely day on the driveway, and hopefully in it's surrounding sites too! And it's take a Muppet to Lunch Day in honor of Jim Henson's birthday! But why stop at one? It's too hard to pick a favorite so today you can take as many Muppets to Lunch as you like. Enjoy ~

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008 ~ THEY'RE BACK!!!! Or at least a first small group of penguins returned for a quick visit in Antarctica!!! I haven't seen them yet but there are pictures of them being there as of the 17th, and at least through the 19th ~ oh boy oh boy oh boy! Penguin Season approaches!!!! New trial link today and have added some new links to the peeper's page for even better online leaf-peeping. So many views so little time ~ Enjoy ~

Monday, September 22nd, 2008 ~ Once again, thanks to those glorious 23 degrees of tilt we have, autumn arrives. It's the day of the autumnal equinox here on the driveway and no doubt where you are too (if not please, oh please let us know. We love both our off planet and off hemisphere viewers!) According to Wikipedia: An equinox is the moment in time (not a whole day) when the center of the Sun can be observed to be directly above the Earth's equator, occurring around March 20 and September 22 each year. On a day which has an equinox, the center of the Sun will spend a nearly equal amount of time above and below the horizon at every location on Earth and night and day will be of nearly the same length. The word equinox derives from the Latin words aequus (equal) and nox (night). In reality, the day is longer than the night at an equinox. That tilt also brings us leaf-peeping and we will try to update the peeping page as the season goes on. Meanwhile enjoy the tilt and the views today ~

Sunday, September 21st, 2008 ~ Last day of summer today (autumnal equinox is tomorrow (Sept 22, 2008; 11:44:18 A.M. EDT(or 11:39, or 11:40, or 11:43 depending on which calculation you use!))) and it is also the last day of the Fiber Festival which will be a very good time. And if summer seems to have gone by too fast for you there may be some tips to be found reading The Time Machine today in honor of HG Wells birthday (who would be 142 today if he were still around, and of course by reading his books....he still is, so I guess his time machine really works...!?!) Enjoy the views ~

Saturday, September 20th, 2008 ~ Running late - just time to say the Hemlock Fiber Festival starts today and we're getting an early (early, early)(yikes!) start. Supposed to be a lovely day on the driveway and at the Hemlock Fairgrounds ~ hope all your views today are good ones. Come on down to the festival if you are in the area, you'll have a great time! Enjoy ~

Friday, September 19th, 2008 ~ We had our first frost warning in the area last night (well, the area south of here but none-the-less) which can only mean it's time for the return of leaf peeping! A bit early? Not at all. A few trees around here have started and can it really ever be too early to start peeping? The regular weather links etc provide some great peeping (have you checked out the ski jump cam?) and the leaf peeping link has be un-retired as well. (not to panic, the Eiffel Tower cam is vacationing over on the retired links page) ~Enjoy!

Thursday, September 18th, 2008 ~ It's another pleasant valley Thursday here on the driveway. Our Louisville viewers (and those in surrounding areas?) are still without power so we will have to enjoy the views here for them. Speaking of which the new baby panda in Atlanta is back in the pink of health and he and Lun Lun are back online.

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008 ~ The first of the post-vacation-few-updates-Wednesday-meeting-days is here. But let's not dwell on that. In case you missed the resealing yesterday you can check it out on the family pages or by clicking here. We'll keep our fingers crossed that power is returning to folks out there (and in return if you could keep yours crossed that the power goes out at our meeting here...) Enjoy the views ~

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 ~ Put on your pilgrim hat and whoop it up because 378 years ago today the Pilgrims left from Plymouth, England for the New World ~ and we all know how the pilgrims loved to whoop it up! If you don't have a pilgrim hat (?) here is one you can make pretty quickly, even at work! The driveway is rumored to be getting sealed today....you'll know almost as soon as we do if that's the case. In any case, for any of you back on the grid, enjoy the views ~

Monday, September 15th, 2008 ~ There is joy in Mudville today as Coycam has returned! It is also the birthday of Marco Polo who brought back great tales of wonder from his years of travel in the mysterious Orient and of Agatha Christie who spun great mysteries from the Orient Express to those of a quiet knitter in St. Mary's Mead (click link for map). And for the many of our viewers (it is possible we have more than 1) who are recovering today, without power, from Ike's travels this weekend ~ we hope that everyone is okay, that damage is minimal and that you all get back on the grid quickly.

Sunday, September 14th, 2008 ~ We're baaaack ~ and just in time for the Harvest Full Moon. From spaceweather.com (which has some really good moon pictures) ~ HARVEST MOON: Tonight's full Moon has a special name--the Harvest Moon. It's the full moon closest to the northern autumnal equinox (Sept. 22). In years past, farmers depended on the light of the Harvest Moon to gather ripening crops late into the night. Post-Edison, we appreciate it mainly for its beauty. We had a great time while we were gone, hope you all did too. And now it's back to the driveway!

Saturday, September 6th through Saturday, September 13th, 2008 ~ We're slowly getting the hang of the annual trip to the lake, and in fact, we leave today for a little more practice! We'll be away from the driveway all week but Driveway Cam will keep you updated on all the action while we're gone (fingers crossed). One more day of Catch-the-Coyqueen (all the links are down there in the previously section ). You can see the posted sightings of them by clicking here ~ let us know if you find them there are still prizes waiting to be claimed! Have a great week, keep an eye on the driveway for us and enjoy the views ~ (we will be enjoying our views too) :)

Friday, September 5th, 2008 ~ Last day of the week with another busy day on the driveway due up, and the temperature might hit 90 today (tho' it's generally cooler by the lake, still, you never know) and that's always a sight on the driveway!?! As for the ever changing game of Catch the Coyqueen ~ it's trickier than you'd think. Here are 3 locations in Chatham where they may, or may not appear, today through some of Sunday: there is bench cam and book store cam and harbor cam. Good Luck finding them, and the prize still waits to be awarded for catching them on location, on camera. Whatever you watch, enjoy the views ~

Thursday, September 4th, 2008 ~ Busy day on the driveway today with at least 3 trips out and back! (put your feet up and rest a spell before viewing) and the rumor is Catch-the-Coyqueen is going to be played in Nantucket today, with possible sighting locations being here Location 1 or here Location 2. No winners yesterday but a couple of pictures of their whale hunt they sent via cell phone are out on the game page ~ click here. Happy coyqueen catching and enjoy the views ~ 11:11 Update ~ they got us again....No Nantucket today either. Today they are at the beach and may wander by Harbor Cam in Chatham if they can. The coyqueen can be very slippery to catch on vacation!

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008 ~ Short driveway viewing day today however the Catch the CoyQueen and Connie game goes on! Didn't hear from anyone yesterday, but we did post the sightings we had ~
click here. Today "there will be 2 girls in Nantucket..." ~ I told them about 2 web cam locations I found there (Location 1 and Location 2) they said they'd do their best to be on at least one of those cameras at some point today if they could. Other eagle eyed viewers may know of other web cams around Nantucket and those are equally as valid. (so are toll booth camera views if there are any out that way and you happen to catch them!) If you spot them on-line somewhere, anywhere, out there, save the picture and send it in. We'll post it on the Catch the CoyQueen page and ~ there are prizes for every one who catches sight of them out and about on a webcam somewhere ! Good Luck and enjoy the views ~ **Update 11:20** Turns out:The 2 girls won't be in Nantucket, Cause that trip they tossed in a bucket, So today they'll hunt whales, On a ship they will sail, But tomorrow we won't let them duck us ??? (limericks are harder than I thought)

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008 ~ Back to Work! Back to viewing! The long weekend is over ~ but not the new game Catch the Coyqueen - You can hunt for her Here (bench cam) or Here (bookstore cam) or Here (harbor cam). Find her online, let us know, and win a prize! And if you were off over the weekend you may have missed that there is a new panda cub in Atlanta, Lun Lun and her cub are online at the zoo. Back in 1752, September 2nd was the day before September 14th in Britain and the British Empire (which included us at the time) ~ as they moved to the Gregorian calendar and had to lose 11 days (!); we will keep a look out to see what date it ends up being tomorrow - but for today... enjoy the views ~ **** UPDATE **** 12:27 ***** The baby panda has been moved to an incubator and so LunLun and the cub are not online today. Also the CoyQueen and Connie are in Provincetown today so you might spot them on any or all of these cameras: Location 1 , Location 2 , or Location 3 . (ps - I told them about these 3 cameras too so they are going to be on the lookout for them; they should be wandering around town from now until about 4:00) Did you find them? Send in your pictures and we'll post them here

Monday, September 1st, 2008 ~ Welcome to Labor Day, brought to you by the good folks at your local unions and the federal government. And welcome to September!! (brought to you by the good folks at the Moon, and by the Romans who gave it it's name (septem for 7 as it was their 7th month before the well meaning (?) and sundry calendar reform folks got their hands in things!)) Lots to watch today ~ a new panda cub was born on Saturday down in Atlanta, be sure to check in on Lun Lun and her cub when you can. A game of Catch the CoyQueen has been started ~ if you find her save the picture and send it in! Besides yesterday's link there is a bench cam (!) and a book store cam that both update periodically during the day ~ so be sure to check in on them as well. There will be a prize for anyone who finds her and sends in a sighting we can verify. And we are all still checking in on Gustav, by radar here, and Hanna as well now and it's projected path here . Full weather information of the storms is available at The National Hurricane Center. Enjoy the views and good luck trying to Catch the Coyqueen ~

Sunday, August 31st, 2008 ~ The last day of August is going to be a sunny one here on the driveway ~ You can check out what the weather is in other locations using any of the variety of links below. Another new place to watch the world and the weather go by is : Stage Harbor in Chatham, MA. (which is not too far from the home of the coyqueen for the next week) You can keep track of Gustav as it continues it's march towards the Gulf coast by radar here or it's projected path here . Hopefully the evacuation will get everyone out of the area ~ full (weather) information of the storm is available at The National Hurricane Center.

Saturday, August 30th, 2008 ~ It's take a monster to lunch day as it's Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's birthday and so, by extension, Frankenstein's birthday too (well, sort of). It's also the birthday of John Mauchly who, along with John Eckert, invented another monster, the first functional computer for general use. ENIAC (perhaps an early, though not commercially successful laptop(?!?)) covered 1800 square feet of floor space, weighed 30 tons, and needed 160 kilowatts of electrical power. [for comparison, today's laptops run about 2 x 13 x 9 inches, weigh around 5.0 pounds, and use approximately 45 watts] Unfortunately the dangerous storm Gustav continues to grow and if you are in it's path we all hope you are not watching drivewaycam but that you are getting somewhere safe and that you drive carefully as you evacuate.

Friday, August 29th, 2008 ~ For lots of our viewers this is the beginning of the last big weekend of the summer ~ if you are off for a long weekend have a great time! Even if you aren't off for a long weekend please have a great time and enjoy the views today of the driveway and beyond. And on this anniversary of Katrina we'll all be keeping our eyes on Gustav ~

Thursday, August 28th, 2008 ~ Last Thursday of the month and the 241st day of the year already!?! Busy day here on the driveway..a couple of trips out and back, UPS is (hopefully) going to stop by which is always exciting and even more so today because it's their 101st birthday..with any luck coycam will be back online today and you never know it just might actually rain here. (stranger things have happened). With such a full day of viewing ahead, please plan accordingly and enjoy the views ~

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008 ~ Again (or is it now?), using the collective wisdom of all their dopplers, 'they' are saying the Fay rains are due tomorrow. So it's another sunny day and one with just a few updates here. The rest of the views will be keeping you apprised of all their changing vistas all day. Enjoy ~

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008 ~ Fay is due in here tomorrow they say but until then, it's another sunny day on the driveway. If you are in any of the areas where the monsoonal thunderstorms have been bouncing about we hope you are staying safe and dry. Enjoy whatever the view and the weather, out your windows or through ours ~

Monday, August 25th, 2008 ~ Good Morning! Welcome to the driveway and to watching the last Monday of the month roll down it ~

Sunday, August 24th, 2008 ~ Don't tell anyone but Bogdan turns 60 today!!!???!!! Doesn't look a day over 59 does he? Happy Birthday Bogdan!! This is also the (black) day back in 2006 that 424 sadly confused astronomers voted to exclude Pluto from their definition of a planet. What were they thinking? And the Olympics close today leaving in their wake millions of newly created insomniacs who will be up for weeks changing channels looking for them. While here on the driveway a somewhat quiet Sunday is in store ~ Enjoy the views ~

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008 ~ A very Happy Birthday to Ms. Chuk today ~ hope it's a great year ahead for you!! Lots of cake and ice-cream all around. Today is also the day, back in 1966 we all got a first look at ourselves from lunar orbit and a lovely addition for our family album:

[On Aug. 23, 1966, the world received its first view of Earth taken by a spacecraft from the vicinity of the Moon. The photo was transmitted to Earth by the Lunar Orbiter I and received at the NASA tracking station at Robledo De Chavela near Madrid, Spain. The image was taken during the spacecraft’s 16th orbit. Image credit: NASA From: http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/imagegallery/image_feature_623.html] And the last weekend of the Olympics is here as is the last weekend of the links page. Enjoy all the views ~

Friday, August 22th, 2008 ~ Today is Ray Bradbury's 88th birthday ~ and for the first time tonight our toast will be raised to him with Dandelion Wine! Found some at a winery in Hammondsport and it's chilling even as I type. If you're in the neighborhood come on by. (it's Friday, we can raise more than one toast) Happy Birthday Mr. Bradbury and many, many more!! As the Olympics begin the march to their last weekend (hard to believe since it seems like it's been nothing but volleyball so far) you can still check out all the remaining events on the links page

Thursday, August 21th, 2008 ~ It's Thursday....as seen on the driveway....... Olympics links page continues ~ if you have a favorite link not on this page let us know and we'll add it

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008 ~ Running late...hardly enough time to say that it was 126 years ago today that Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture" was first performed in Moscow, 112 years ago today that the dial telephone was patented in U.S.A. (wonder how many of our viewers are going "Huh? What's a dial telephone???"), and 31 years ago today that Voyager 2 was launched ~ it's still going strong , and still sending data back from about 8 BILLION miles away!! (it's now long past Pluto (which was of course still a planet when Voyager left...))

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008 ~ A few trips out and back today for your viewing pleasure. The new links are just crying out to be viewed and the old standards are always ready to amuse as well. And if, for whatever strange reason, you can't bring yourself to eat cake and ice-cream without a birthday prancing about please note that today is the birthday of John Flamsteed (the English astronomer who established the Greenwich Observatory) and that is as good a reason as any for some celebrating! Does it seem to you that the only Olympic sport on TV is beach volleyball? ...check out the list of what's showing where and when! Enjoy the views ~

Monday, August 18th, 2008 ~ Yooo Hooo...Delores Beedle.... we wish you a very Happy Birthday today!!!! To celebrate her birthday, and the penultimate Monday this month, there are new links all over the place! Okay, they aren't all over the place, but there is a whole new row of links in the table below (it's the penultimate row, right above the quiz row) with sites that dovetail so nicely into the drivewaycam universe. There is also a new trial site we hope you will try out. And please let us know how you like them all. Track and field is in full bloom in Beijing! Enjoy the views ~

Sunday, August 17th, 2008 ~ A sunny and quiet Sunday here on the driveway ~ always a good thing. Meanwhile in Beijing..... Enjoy the views ~

Saturday, August 16th, 2008 ~ Today is the last eclipse of 2008. It's a partial lunar eclipse and will be viewable, from North America, only via webcam ~ starting at 3:30 PM EDT (and will last about 3 hrs). You can view the eclipse live from Norway or, from Holland or from the Canary Islands. Links courtesy of www.spaceweather.com And Olympics all weekend to watch! You can find what's on, what's happening, and what's shaking in Beijing using this Olympic link page. Please let us know if you have other links you'd like to add to the list.

Friday, August 15th, 2008 ~ A very Happy Friday to us all, revealed in 10 minute increments! As the weekend gets ready to slide into view however we don't want to let today slip away from us. Also wouldn't want the anniversary of the first (and quintessential some say) imitation food to make it's way into our kitchens to slip by unnoticed either ~ that's right, Crisco (CRYStalized Cottonseed Oil) was unveiled on this date back in 1911. (wonder how many of the original cans are still on kitchen shelves and in use? yikes!) One stop Olympic link shopping continues, let us know if you find others you like.

Thursday, August 14th, 2008 ~ Between meteor showers and late night olympics what is needed here is a quiet day on the driveway ~ which works out well because that is exactly what's "on deck" for today. Enjoy the views ~ Quiet, by definition, does not exclude the Olympic's page of links which continues to bring the games to you one link at a time.

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008 ~ On this day back in 1942, Disney released the 5th of their animated films (sometimes aka the march of the missing mothers collection) and we were first introduced to Bambi, Thumper, Flower, Faline and the whole woodland gang. Speaking of woodland gangs....many of our southern viewers return to school this morning! We wish them all (or is that all y'all?) a great school year ahead. Few updates today will give you lots of time for olympic viewing, or maybe some general deer viewing . (where you hopefully won't relive the psychic scarring of your first viewing of Bambi, or of all those first days back to school either for that matter!) And of course, the Olympic's page of links continues to bring the olympics to you one link at a time.

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008 ~ A short morning of updates, more later this afternoon ~ in the meantime, today is the 31st anniversary of the very first free flight of the Space Shuttle Enterprise! Not equipped for space flight, it was carried into the air on NASA's converted 747 and then released to glide to a landing. To celebrate ~ a new quiz . :) Enjoy the views (and please let me know if anyone got to see the meteor shower; cloudy here but it cleared up on and off so we got to see a few of them) And of course, the Olympics continue as do the links we're collecting with the link to see the daily schedule of events.

Monday, August 11th, 2008 ~ The birthday sheep return to wish Marty the Happiest of Birthdays today!! In her honor a new trial link is in place (both at the bottom right in the table below and by clicking HERE ). Cleaned up/changed another link as well ~ the Niagara Falls site is off-line so for now, in it's place, you can watch grass grow! (technology at it's finest) The Olympics continue as do the links we're collecting with the link to see the daily schedule of events. And don't forget the Perseid meteor shower, currently underway, peaks early tomorrow morning (before driveway cam gets up and going), on Tuesday, August 12th. They say the best time to look is during the dark hours before dawn on Tuesday morning when forecasters expect 50 to 100 meteors per hour. 3AM in your backyard....cup of hot chocolate or coffee....or come on over to our backyard! You don't even have to bring a mug. (Earlier viewing works too, starting around 9PM looking NE.)

Sunday, August 10th, 2008 ~ A slight pause in Olympic fervor to remember (and to thank) Henri Nestlé, born August 10th, 1814, who started the company that now buys up more than ten percent of the world’s entire crop of coffee and cacao beans ! Okay ~ here again is the link to the page of Olympic links we're collecting which also includes a link to see the daily schedule of events. [We're hoping webcam watching becomes an event itself at some point, and are working to keep all our viewers in top shape until that time.]

Saturday, August 9th, 2008 ~ For all of us Olympic junkies out there it's going to be a busy couple of weeks surfing and watching ~ (loved the opening ceremonies last night! I wish I could have been there). In addition to the links yesterday here is a page with the list of links that we've found or that have been sent in ~ also includes link to see the daily schedule of events which will be updated as the games go on. And, of course, (close to) live action at the driveway and pond venues continues here. Enjoy!

Friday, August 8th, 2008 ~ BAHM, BAHM, BAH-BAH-BAH-BAH-BAHM, BAHM BAHM BAH-BAHM, BAH-BAHM BAHM BAH-BHA-BHA-BAH BAHM ~ (work on it....) It's Here!!! 8-8-8 And the start of the Beijing Olympics!!! An abundance of links do abound ~ thou haven't found a fun webcam in Beijing yet (if you have suggestions please send them in). However in a classic drivewaycam sort of way there is a link to watch, via a webcam, the giant video screen in Trafalgar Square (London) as it shows us what is being broadcast to them there. (from 8AM-9PM everyday, London time) And how perfect is that? :) The cam will not be on the screen exclusively but it's a great view of Trafalgar Square in any case. And for those of you who like to see into the future here is a link to a live cam of the 2012 Olympic site as it's being built. Let the games (and the viewing) begin ~

Thursday, August 7th, 2008 ~ If you feel like you are just going around in circles today don't fight it... on this day back in 1888 the Revolving Door was patented in America. Considered energy efficient, (drafts can't get in, heating and cooling can't get out), excellent at traffic flow (people can get in and out at the same time) and good security (by limiting the number of people who can enter at a time) ~ what more could you ask for in a door?!? Our thanks to Theophilus Van Kannel. [and to http://museum-tracker.com/blog/ and wikipedia for the information]~

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008 ~ It's Few-updates-Wednesday again, so for a few minutes...the driveway and then it's on to all the other views ~

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008 ~ A very happy birthday to Neil Armstrong who is 78 today and to Wendell Berry who turns 74. (that combo is quite the yin and yang of technology) And in keeping with the theme of mutually correlated opposites it's also the anniversary of the 1st traffic light to be installed at Euclid Ave and E 105th Street in Cleveland. So whatever you watch today... the moon, crops growing, or traffic... enjoy the views ~

Monday, August 4th, 2008 ~ And we're back, just in time for the first Monday of August to grace the driveway (looks like it brought lots of sunshine with it) ~

Friday, August 1st, 2008 ~ Hopefully someone got to watch the eclipse ~ sort of slept through it on this side of driveway cam (hate when that happens). The dog days have arrived in spirit if not in temperature as August gets underway on the driveway, and chances are good it's getting underway wherever you are too!. In a bold experiment (well not so much bold per se but that sounds good doesn't it?), driveway cam is going to be left running for the weekend as some of us here take the weekend off. Others of us here, rumor has it, will be painting and/or partying but you'll know that 10 minutes after it happens just by watching. In honor of Herman Melville's birthday today please report any white whale sightings (on the driveway or anywhere else for that matter) and enjoy the views ~

Thursday, July 31st, 2008 ~ Here we are on the precipice of a new month, with the last look at July today, from the driveway, in 10 minute vignettes ~

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008 ~ Another few-updates-Wednesday rolls down the driveway this morning.....but it looks like coycam is back live to cover for driveway cam's day off! Enjoy ~

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008 ~ NASA turns 50 today!! It is also the birthday of Dag Hammarskjold (who would have been 103) and the anniversary of the installation of the first iron lung in 1927. Rounding out today's odd collection of events is the premier of the Beatles film HELP in 1965, and the anniversary of the wedding of Dianna and Charles in '81. Which all adds up, any way you add it, to an excellent day to enjoy the views ~

Monday, July 28th, 2008 ~ Here it is, the last Monday we'll ever have to face this month, and no coffee in sight yet on the driveway or on my desk. (small tangent... just read that today, in 1943, marked the end of coffee rationing in the US ~ may have to have go get a latte to celebrate). While wandering the links today be sure to visit Beatrix Potter, through the gate, in honor of her birthday back in 1866! Hard to imagine the world without her ~ or Peter (click picture to visit)

Sunday, July 27th, 2008 ~ A quiet Sunday on the driveway, only a few trips out, and a few back, are planned so there is plenty of time to catch some views, or some ballgames*, or some rays or even some Zzzzzzzz's. Any of which will let you relax and catch your breath ~ [*also found a link of radio stations for listening to ballgames (perfect for a Sunday) (it's an old one but might still be worth checking it out)]

Saturday, July 26th, 2008 ~ Happy Flinging to all you Flamingo Flingers!! Those of us who sadly can't join you will be checking in when we can. :) So have a drink or two (or a fling or two) on us today and don't worry... what happens at the Fling,

stays at the Fling.........mums the word!

Friday, July 25th, 2008 ~ After more than 48 hrs of no driveway updates be sure to pace yourself as the driveway returns. The rumors of driveway cam being abducted by aliens, and returned in time to mark the opening of the new X-Files movie, (which we haven't seen yet but will soon!), have been greatly exaggerated. (or have they?) It's a busy day as driveway cam gets back online....A great new chicken cam link (thanks Em!) is taking the place of the Nest Links (retired 'til next year), and some new trial sites are being auditioned for the trial cam link, and will be coming soon. And a Very Happy 30th Birthday today to the world's first test-tube baby!! Coy cam is abuzz with party preparations, (Bman's lawn painting services are on site and poised to begin) and quiz #9 still waits patiently to be answered ~ the truth is out there, you just have to look for it. Enjoy the views ~

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008 ~ It's a few updates Wednesday on the driveway but the rest of the links are out there updating to beat the band... Enjoy the views ~

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008 ~ Driveway Cam is tickled pink to welcome back Coy Cam in full view and full color (the decidedly green tone of Coy Cam is gone thank goodness)! A new camera and better than ever for watching the excitement of the pond unfold. Enjoy that and all of the views today ~

Monday, July 21st, 2008 ~ Another on-again off-again rainy (with some hail thrown in for good measure) day on the driveway. Hope you are staying dry (and hail free) whereever you are while catching up on the views ~

Sunday, July 20th, 2008 ~ Looks like a rainy start to a rainy day here. While thunderstorms play about and rain runs down the driveway, it might be a good time to look up... on google you can look up Apollo 11 (which landed on the moon 39 years ago today) for some interesting looks back ~ or you can look up Apollo 11 conspiracy for any number of alterative views of what the moon landing looked like. With some looking around you'll find evidence that proves your view ~ which ever side of the moon or soundstage you are on.

Saturday, July 19th, 2008 ~ Lil' Lexi turns 3 today!!! ~ A very Happy Birthday Lexi ~ from all of your friends and family and fans on driveway cam and everywhere. And just 70 years before Lexi made her debut, parking meters made theirs ~ in Oklahoma City the first automatic parking meter in the U.S., the Park-O-Meter invented by Carlton Magee, was installed. Today is also the birthday of the man who brought Starbucks to every corner ~ Howard Shultz. There must be a way to connect these events...if you figure it out please let us all know. In the meantime it's ice-cream, birthday cake, and latte's all around!

Friday, July 18th, 2008 ~ First we'd like to wish Joe Torre a very Happy Birthday today! It's also the birthday of Nelson Mandela and John Glenn, so cake all around.... Here it's going to be a quiet day on the driveway as a heat wave wanders through - rumor has it we are in for "a real scorcher" (our actual weather report). So find a seat in the shade, grab a glass of lemonade, to go with the cake, and enjoy the views ~

Thursday, July 17th, 2008 ~ Love and best wishes for a Happy Anniversary to Aunt Joyce and Roger today!! And for all the rest of drivewaycam's viewers out there.... enjoy the views ~

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008 ~ Accidentally (although happily) caught some of the fireworks in Paris yesterday ~ posted some screen snaps here. For those of you counting it is 197th day of the year, and it is also the anniversary of the first time a duck-billed platypus was exhibited in the US (back in 1922). Originally it was thought by many to be a hoax but luckily for all of us it's not and we are a more interesting planet because of it living here (here being the east coast of Australia, not here as in the driveway (where our platypus population is sadly lacking) But if you see one wander by let us know!!) Enjoy the views ~

Monday, July 14th, 2008 ~ Happy Bastille Day to one and all ~ cake all around!!! ...and in case you didn't make it to France for the celebration, or have no gates to storm, don't lose your heads ~ you can watch the festivities at the Eiffel Tower or at any of the links today.

Sunday, July 13th, 2008 ~ Eagle-eyed viewers may be wondering why we had 2 July 11ths and/or where July 12th went. Well, it's just one of those mysteries that has no answer. But today is the 13th, it is Sunday, and it is a good day for checking out the views ~ also would be a good day for answering quiz #9 which is still out there waiting....

Saturday, July 12th, 2008 ~ A quiet and hot Saturday is due up on the driveway today. Hope you can enjoy the views from some shady, cool spot ~

Friday, July 11th, 2008 ~ It is the birthday of one of our favorites today. E.B. White (author of Charlotte's Web and Elements of Style, among many others) was born this day back in 1899 ~ might just have to forgo link hopping (and work of course) and instead re-read the story about Wilbur and his friend Charlotte ......

Thursday, July 10th, 2008 ~ Cooler weather prevails today (always a good thing), which makes it a lovely day to sit back and enjoy the breeze and the views. While wandering the links you may want to take in some traffic cams today in celebration of the 1st concrete street paved in America, back in 1891 (or 2?) in Bellefountaine Ohio. Happy Surfing ~

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008 ~ Ewfay updatesay ednesdayway, utbay otslay otay atchway allay overay hetay lacepay...the crackerjack(?!) British cryptologists who broke the secret Enigma code, used by the German army to direct ground-to-air operations on the Eastern front, on this day in 1941 could easily decode the above into: Few updates Wednesday but lots to watch all over the place ~ and if you aren't going to be coding or decoding today then there is that quiz that is still waiting for an answer..... And check out Jupiter tonight as it shines the brightest (and biggest) it will all year! (www.spaceweather.com)

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008 ~ The party had to end today as Clores left to go back home ~ we all hope they are having a safe and not too hot, not too long, not lots of traffic trip today. If you pass them on the road please wave! Or you might want to watch for them along I71 in Cincinnati (they'll be headed south, on the west side) ~ grey car, full to the top! If I hear from them I'll tell them to wave to the cameras!

Monday, July 7th, 2008 ~ Having failed to complete the required number of runs to Abbott's it was voted on (and passed!!) to extend the visit by 1 day or for as long as it takes(we are nothing if not law abiding). Driveway cam got miffed yesterday it seems and shut itself off during the trials , the camera angle remains in the event there will be another round today. So, as a new week gets underway here on the driveway(and front yard)......enjoy the views ~

Sunday, July 6th, 2008 ~ Happy Birthday Mark!!! We all hope it's a good one for you!!!! Not sure what is on the agenda for today, but we are going to move driveway cam to have it be badminton cam so you can watch as the group practices for the Olympic Trials coming up soon...... Posting a few more pictures as we have time ; keep checking, I will get to them! Have a great day and of course enjoy the views ~

Saturday, July 5th, 2008 ~ Hope everyone had a great 4th yesterday and has a great 5th today too!! Got a few pictures posted ~ try the link here (it's also on the family pages). Going to the lighthouse and beach today and whatever else we can fit in as well. Enjoy the views ~

Friday, July 4th, 2008 ~ A very Happy Birthday to Ellie today!!!! There will be fireworks a'plenty for you Ellie ~ here is to a great year ahead for you. And a very happy and safe 4th of July to all of our viewers and our viewees! Enjoy and be careful out there ~

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008 ~ More running around today - maybe pictures posted tonight - enjoy the views!

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008 ~ The Driveway is going to be hopping today with at least 1 (!!??!!!) trip to Wegmans and who knows what else. While you are watching the views today keep an eye out for Amelia Earhart too, it's been 71 years to the day since she disappeared so you never know, it could, might, maybe, be the day she reappears too!

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008 ~ July on the Driveway is Here!! And in just 12 hrs, or so, many of the Clores will be too!!!! (going to be some busy driveway viewing in the days ahead). The Zone Improvement Plan was put into effect on this day back in 1963 ~ the 5 digit ZIP code, that no one was possibly going to be able to remember, was set up to help mail delivery. "The first digit designated a broad geographical area of the United States, ranging from zero for the Northeast to nine for the far West. This was followed by two digits that more closely pinpointed population concentrations and those sectional centers accessible to common transportation networks. The final two digits designated small post offices or postal zones in larger zoned cities". But thanks to the reminders from friendly Mr. ZIP we all did learn our zip-codes, and mostly remember to use them too (although some of us think the +4 thing is just a little over the top.....they're going to need a cute +4 mascot too I guess)

Monday, June 30th, 2008 ~ The Corvette turns 55 today! On June 30, 1953 the first production Chevrolet Corvette rolled off the line at the GM facility in Flint Michigan where 300 Corvettes were built that year (each car was built by hand). In their honor, a new quiz today!

Then and Now

Sunday, June 29th, 2008 ~ Unfortunately the Muncy/Ashland Tennis Team went down in glorious defeat yesterday but we salute their efforts and hope if any one got any pictures of Cheryl in action they'll send them to us! A quiet day of driveway action (compared to the normal frenzy?) leaves lots of time to catch all your other favorite views ~ Oooops! 6:54pm ~ forgot to upload this this morning...the camera was running but forgot to move the text!

Saturday, June 28th, 2008 ~ Cheryl and her doubles partner are marching through this round of the state tennis tournament ~ they are 2-0:

Good Luck to them in today's matches and to the whole team!!! We're all keeping our fingers crossed!

Friday, June 27th, 2008 ~ Yesterday, masquerading as the 25th, was actually the 26th (after wrestling it to the ground and removing it's mask it's true identity was revealed) which means that today is the 27th. A big day for all you Dark Shadows fans out there. The sci-fi (?) fantasy soap opera premiered on this day back in 1966! While Barnabas Collins and associates are long gone (as long gone as ghosts and vampires can be) they live on in DVD's and you can always check in here to see what's happening at Collin(g)wood now.....

Thursday, June 25th, 2008 ~ Few updates Wednesday passed by rather quickly but we're back online for All Day Viewing Thursday! We're working on getting CoyCam back up and running as well, however since the CoyQueen is off to the USTA/Southern - Kentucky - Kentucky District Championship this weekend with her team (Go Muncy/Ashland's!) it's another pondless weekend out there for most of us. So once again, here are a few CoyCam substitute links to help you through the pond viewing drought. Enjoy! ONE, TWO, THREE

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008 ~ A good day for some historic viewing and reminiscing. 108 years ago today Oliver Lippincott became the first motorist in Yosemite National Park , when he drove there in his Locomobile steamer. And in 1947 on this day (rumor has it) the term "Flying Saucers" first appeared when Kenneth Arnold, an American pilot, reported seeing strange objects near Mt. Rainier, Washington. He described them as "saucers skipping across the water," hence the term "flying saucers" was born. Enjoy looking for cars, mountains and flying saucers today ~ The first car in Yosemite:

Parting words of wisdom from a sign at the top of Glacier Point in Yosemite before the installation of pipe rails: "It is 3000 feet to the Bottom and no undertaker to meet you. TAKE NO CHANCES. There is a difference between bravery and just plain ORDINARY FOOLISHNESS." (picture from http://www.naturalhistorymag.com)

Monday, June 23rd, 2008 ~ Tonight is Midsummer Night's Eve! Also called St. John's Eve. [St. John is the patron saint of beekeepers] It's a time when the hives are full of honey which is why June's full moon is called the Mead (or Honey) Moon. While celebrated all over the world, in Sweden, Finland and Estonia, Midsummer's Eve is considered the greatest festival of the year, comparable only with Walpurgis Night, Christmas Eve, and New Year's Eve. So let the romping about begin a'new but let's be careful out there while romping so as not to be spirited away by the fairies ~ we've lost more viewers that way.... (With thanks to Writer's Almanac, Wikipedia, School of the Seasons and of course Google)

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008 ~ The weather here today calls for...."Clouds, peeks of sun, and scattered showers or thunderstorms. High 77" which causes us to wonder is it going to be partly cloudy or partly sunny? Guess we'll have to watch to figure it out. In either case, as the day progresses, you'll know 10 minutes after we do ~

Saturday, June 21st, 2008 ~ Hope everyone enjoyed romping in the woods on a solstice evening last night. And now it's seriously on to summer! Speaking of which - this time of year is GREAT viewing in Alaska with their more than 19 hrs of daylight. (one of these days we have got to organize a summer solstice trip up there!) It's going to be a lazy day on the driveway in honor of the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer just begun. Enjoy the day and the views!

Friday, June 20th, 2008 ~ It's here ~ the longest viewing day of the year!!! The June Solstice is today at 7:59 PM 'round these parts. And in most locations north of Equator, the longest day of the year is around this date. We are getting 15 hours, 23 minutes and 16 seconds of daylight today! :) To find out how long your day is going to be where you are you can check sunrise/sunset (admit it, you're humming the tune now or at least thinking about it) times right here. Enjoy the views ~

Thursday, June 19th, 2008 ~ Happy Birthday Karen! Everyone at Driveway Cam and it's affiliates wishes you a fabulous day. In a rare find, who knew cameras have existed THIS long(!?!?!), here are a couple of looks back in time ~ all of the pictures have been moved to a new page, click here

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008 ~ Believe it or not it's the middle of the week already! Seems like it just started a couple of days ago doesn't it? And believe it or not it's also the 25th anniversary of an American woman going into space for the first time when Sally Ride launched in the Challenger Shuttle ~ just 20 years and 2 days after Valentina V. Tereshkova (Soviet Union) was the first woman ever to do so. Sure wish they would install a space station cam. But until they do please enjoy our more local views ~

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008 ~ A few days ahead of few updated views of the driveway, but all of the rest of the views out there will be happy to serve. The peacocks have yet to make an appearance, they should be arriving any time....and it's M.C.Escher's birthday today so watch out for heading up celebrating stairways that will only lead you down a floor or two. Enjoy the views and watch your step ~

Monday, June 16th, 2008 ~ HAPPY BIRTHDAY UNCLE ED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Have a wonderful day and we all hope it's the start to a great year ahead. And to all of us Happy Bloomsday!!! Enjoy the views ~ (the return of O'Shea's cam just for the day!)

Sunday, June 15th, 2008 ~ A very Happy Father's Day to all the fathers out there and to all the fathees too! Officially established in 1966 by then President Johnson, fathers get to be 'King of the Day' on the 3rd Sunday of each June. This year that date is also the birthday of Edvard Grieg, who, in keeping with the theme, wrote Hall of the Mountain King (in his Peer Gynt Suite), and is also the day that the Magna Carta was officially sealed by King John (under duress, but none the less) allowing that subjects have rights beyond the power of their rulers. If you want to check out a kingly view today try this one, and enjoy all your views today ~ With thanks to Writer's Digest for the information and the links

Saturday, June 14th, 2008 ~ Happy Flag Day !! And a very happy Knit In Public Day too! (when you go knit in public take a flag with you....). The shuttle is due back this morning, and we are still waiting on the Peacock eggs to hatch. Such a busy day ~ add to that a new link was added to the table last week where you can now watch the fog roll in around the Golden Gate Bridge area (don't worry, the South Pole link is on the retired links page) and the day seems almost impossibly full doesn't it? Happy viewing ~

Friday, June 13th, 2008 ~ Love it when Friday and the 13th meet up like this! It's almost spooky when it happens ~ Good news however for all you paraskevidekatriaphobes out there (and who among us isn't to some degree? Raise your hands we want a count) this is the last Friday the 13th this year. There are 3 next year so you may want to plan accordingly. In the strange and almost useless information category you may be interested to know that there were 172 Friday the 13ths during the 18th century, 172 in the 19th century, and eerily enough 172 in the 20th century. This is the 14th one so far this century....you can find out when the next ones are due by clicking this link... Enjoy the views today, even if they are from under your bed!

Thursday, June 12th, 2008 ~ A quiet day on the driveway (shocked aren't you?) with a few trips out and back in the works. Today is Anne Frank's birthday, and on her 13th birthday, in 1942, she received a diary ~ view of the tree mentioned in her diary (see link in table below) is currently blocked but there is a wonderful collection of information on the rest of the museum website (click on her name to get there). Enjoy the views ~

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008 ~ A very Happy Kamehameha Day to all! Here on the driveway there will be less celebrating than usual as it's few updates Wednesday but we hope you all can juggle your viewing schedule to get at least one traditional hula dance in today. ~

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008 ~ To commemorate the anniversary of the day Ben Franklin's kite was hit by lightening....the storm that has been plaguing the midwest arrives here shortly, hopefully giving the Midwest a chance to re-group, dry out and start the huge cleanup.

Monday, June 9th, 2008 ~ The Peacocks on Incubator Egg Cam are due to hatch this week!!!! (there is such joy in Mudville) And in other bird news it's the 74th anniversary of Donald Duck's first film appearance ~ The Wise Little Hen! Meanwhile it's a Monday Meltdown here on the driveway as we continue efforts to break heat records. Today's record, 92, was set in 1950 and you can check in to see how we're doing here or here (currently it's 81.7 at 8:44am). Hope everyone out there is staying cool ~

Sunday, June 8th, 2008 ~ Still ice tea on the porch weather, or on the veranda if you are of that persuasion. Where ever you find shade (and an extension cord) enjoy the views ~

Saturday, June 7th, 2008 ~ Heat Wave waves on. A quick check of cities where the highest concentration of Drivewaycam viewers resides revealed that the only one not forecasted to be in the 90's today is Kalamazoo Michigan! So let's be careful out there people, put your feet up, and sit a spell. In KY there will be a break in the taking it easy as Adam graduates today! Wish we could be there, take lots of pictures! We now return you to your regular viewing and to watching the temperatures rise ~

Friday, June 6th, 2008 ~ S'posed to get hot today, you'll have a front row seat to watch the driveway melt! It's the last day of school for many of our viewers (summer is ready and waiting for you at the sound of the last bell! And no doubt driving you crazy, teasing you by being so close. Hang on ~ it's amost here!!!!) While back in 1933 on this day the first drive-in movie theater opened in Camden, New Jersey. Don't know what was showing there and then but at our local drive-in (3 screens no waiting) there is something for everyone tonight. If you want to meet us there - just call! In the meantime enjoy the views ~

Thursday, June 5th, 2008 ~ The heat wave that has been working it's way up and across the country is supposed to begin to wander in here today and stay for a while ~ while we're off brewing ice tea and laying in supplies (ice cubes, macaroni salad, frozen grapes, bowls of berries in the fridge, you know, all the usual veranda/porch swing/manit'shot survival stuff) sit back and enjoy the views unless of course you haven't gotten your supplies together yet either. Driveway view may include thunderstorms this afternoon, and don't forget to check in on Kitchen Cam (temporary new home of coycam) ~

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008 ~ Few updates from the driveway today but Coycam has become Kitchen Cam (!) for a few days and is up and running (scroll down for latest picture) ~ with an extra page of pictures from yesterday evening to check out as well. It's also Banding Day for the Falcon Chicks in Columbus. They've gotten their names: Boomer, Mistic, Justice, and Columbus and today they get their bands ~ Enjoy the views!

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008 ~ Some actual rain trickling down the driveway this morning! We could use some more but we'll take what ever we can get. Enjoy the views ~

Monday, June 2nd, 2008 ~ It was on this day in 1865 that the Civil War officially ended with the surrender of Edmund Kirby Smith, commander of the Confederate forces west of the Mississippi. And in 1935 on June 2nd, Babe Ruth retired and it's also the day in 1953 that Elizabeth II was crowned. Hard to add anything to that combination of factoids. So let's hope it's the start of a great week out there (Columbus falcon chicks get banded and named on Wednesday, don't forget to put in your vote for their names on their site) and it's on to Monday ~

Sunday, June 1st, 2008 ~ Today for your viewing pleasure....yard work (should the weather cooperate). It's enough to make your heart race isn't it? Coycam will be offline temporarily - hoping for a slightly (and also temporary) geographically altered return soon. Here is a link to help you bridge the gap until the return, sort of an under the scenes view. Okay - on to watching June bust out wherever and all over. Enjoy the views ~

Saturday, May 31st, 2008 ~ There are some pictures of the banding in Rochester yesterday on this link to check out if you didn't get to watch as it happened. The Imprints section of their website, and the banding page link from yesterday (see previously on Driveway Cam) has some as well. The Space Shuttle Discovery takes off this afternoon (5:02) ~ and going along for the ride is Buzz Lightyear ! For possibly even more action (?) check out coycam this afternoon too... And we would be more than remiss if we didn't mention that today is the 149th anniversary of the day Big Ben first rang out! Enjoy the views from there, and from here at the driveway to infinity* and beyond!!!! * Right. Don't actually have a webcam for infinity. However there are some truly amazing pictures from the Hubble Telescope (it's as close as we can get)

Friday, May 30th, 2008 ~ It's here! Banding (or blinging perhaps?) day for the Rochester Falcon Chicks! This link should be up and working as they get started (around 9:00 - 9:30 this morning). Pictures will be posted on their Imprints link, and of course there are the live cameras to watch as well. They are scheduled to remove the chicks from the box around 10:00. Hope it's not too traumatic for the chicks (who also get named today), or for any of us viewing!

Thursday, May 29th, 2008 ~ A very Happy Birthday to B-man today as he starts one of the wonderfully consecutive years ~ 12!!!!! Hope it's a great day for you and the start of a great year. :)

Wednesday, May 27th, 2008 ~ Few-updates-Wednesday....also the 71st anniversary of the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge. A couple of really nice views of it here and in high def here. Enjoy the views ~

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008 ~ So confusing when the week starts on Tuesday.....today should be the usual Tuesday comings and goings with some concerted hope for rain for the newly planted tomatoes, peppers and strawberries. The Peacock Eggs are due to be on Incubator Cam starting today, the poll for picking names for the Columbus Falcons is up and running (get your votes in) ~ banding day for them is June 4th. And clear your calendars because Banding Day for the Rochester falcon chicks is this Friday, May 30th!

Monday, May 26th, 2008 ~ It Came From Outer Space, the first 3D Science Fiction movie opened today back in 1953. That title phrase may well be the talk on Mars today if anyone saw the Phoenix spacecraft land there yesterday! Already there are great pictures coming back from the arctic region of Mars ~ it was a great landing and hopefully will be a spectacularly successful mission. Have a good Memorial Day and check out some of the views on another planet ~

Sunday, May 25th, 2008 ~ Looks like another beautiful day here on the driveway where nearby some gardening may ensue, and hopefully a nice day as well in Indianapolis too where, rumor has it, there is a race of some sort today. Enjoy whatever you're viewing today!

Saturday, May 24th, 2008 ~ A very Happy Birthday to JimboBillyBob!! (Who doesn't look a day over 57. Yet.) Driveway cam hopes it's the start of a very good year for him and the start of a very good Saturday for all of us!

Friday, May 23rd, 2008 ~ It's another take a library to lunch day (or take yourself to the library at lunch, or the ever popular (among library workers) take a library worker to lunch day) ~ as it was this day back in 1911 that then President William Taft dedicated the New York Public Library. It currently has over 51 million items in it's collections of which over 20 million are books! And there are over 3100+ workers there so if you are in NYC as you read this you'll need to bring some friends with you when you go to take the staff to lunch... And somewhere in the stacks there and hopefully in your stacks at home too you'll find books by Margaret Wise Brown who was born a year earlier, to the day, in Brooklyn. Might be a good day to check out Goodnight Moon from your local library ~ but do it quietly or you'll get a librarian whispering HUSH to you. Enjoy the books and the views!

Please do not feed the Lions.

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008 ~ A cold and damp Thursday on the driveway. Seems like the perfect day to make some tea, pull up the blankets and enjoy the views ~

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008 ~ The American Red Cross is 127 years old today ~ they'd love a pint or two if you are looking for the perfect gift. Meanwhile it's another few updates Wednesday (the meeting formally known as few updates Thursday) and the PC will be leaving, sadly. If you get a chance, enjoy the views and nest hopping for us!

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008 ~ A little historic perspective (?) for this primary day....on which, in 1873 the patent for work pants reinforced with rivets (aka Blue Jeans) was given to Jacob Davis and Levy Strauss (one had the idea, the other had the money), and also on this day, in 1899, the very first speeding ticket was given out to, not surprisingly, a cabby in Manhattan! Jacob German was stopped and arrested for driving at the dangerous speed of 12mph on Lexington Avenue. Suddenly it all makes sense now right? (if you nodded yes please email us as we'd love to know too) Happy voting in KY and Oregon, and enjoy the views where ever you are ~

Monday, May 19th, 2008 ~ Henry VIII fell head over heels for Jane Seymour which caused the head of his wife, Anne Boleyn, to fall on this day back in 1536. Compared to that this is going to be a very quiet day on the driveway ~

Sunday, May 18th, 2008 ~ Congratulations to Big Brown who blew them all away yesterday...and it's on to the Belmont! And as for actually being blown away ~ it's the 28th Anniversary of the 1980 Eruption of Mount St. Helens. While surfing today you can check in live with the volcano by clicking here on the Mt. St. Helens Volcano Cam or by using the link in the table below. And if you google "Mount St Helen eruption" you might just blow your whole Sunday reading and watching videos! (there are some amazing facts and pictures out there......)

Saturday, May 17th, 2008 ~ Several trips out and back should keep the driveway hopping (?), the Cleveland falcon chicks were banded and named this week, and we're still anxiously waiting for the peacock eggs on Incubator cam (well, some of us are anxiously waiting) but it is true that the chicks running around there now are pretty darn cute ~ here's hoping you get a chance to sit a spell and check out some views today. Enjoy!

Friday, May 16th, 2008 ~ It's here - National Ride Your Bike to Work Day! Let us know if you biked to work - even if in spirit and not in actuality (we are closing out our week of walking to work here, with only minor grumblings from the accounting department. (and no surprise there!)). Enjoy the views and watch the road ~

Thursday, May 15th, 2008 ~ Today the week continues (always a good thing) to roll on down the driveway, the Lilac Festival continues, National Bike to Work Week continues, and we are smack dab in the middle of National Safe Digging Month!!!! So enjoy view hopping and be sure to call 811 to Know What's Below, before you start digging for anything! (Driveway Cam loves to participate in public service announcements when it can).

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008 ~ It's off to the condo for the PC giving Driveway Cam most of the day off. In other news, today is the 401st anniversary of the landing at what would become Jamestown Virginia, it is the 204th anniversary of the start of the Lewis and Clark expedition, as well as the 60th anniversary of the state of Israel. We are also getting 2 more minutes of daylight today ~ giving you a bit longer for viewing your favorite sites! (and maybe time for a few driveway shots later, grid willing). Enjoy the views ~

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008 ~ A quiet Tuesday on the driveway ~ which means it's a perfect day for nest hopping and pond pondering and of course visiting all your other favorite sites too. Enjoy the views!

Monday, May 12th, 2008 ~ Welcome to National Bike to Work Week !!!! And if a week is simply too much to tackle all at once, just make plans for Friday because May 16th is National Ride your Bike/Walk to Work Day. [While B2WW is not officially being celebrated here in NY, the personnel at Driveway Cam have pledged to walk to work all week] We are still celebrating the addition of Coy Pond Cam and there is a new quiz today(!) to add to the celebrations, there are chicks a plenty to watch and if that wasn't enough nonsense for today it is also Edward Leary's birthday! Enjoy some of his drawings, some of his poetry and all of the views ~

Sunday, May 11th, 2008 ~ A very Happy Mother's Day to everyone out there, from everyone here ~

Saturday, May 10th, 2008 ~ Another beautiful Saturday on the driveway ~ we are enjoying this great weather while our usual spring weather is off traveling where ever it might be. (it hasn't even sent a postcard so we're not sure where it is). For those of our viewers in the severe weather bands - take care and hang on to your hats! There is a new addition to the driveway cam family!!!! Cheryl got her Coy Pond Cam (with a side of driveway) up and running yesterday and we are pleased as punch (and you know how pleased punch can be) to add the link to our collection. And before you write in ~ coy is an adjective, koi is the noun, and carp, with the golden color mutation, are the fish in her pond. :) Click on the link above or the coy cam picture below to get to her page where you can see all the preceding action at her pond. Enjoy the views!

Friday, May 9th, 2008 ~ The Lilac Festival begins today, and runs through the 18th. If you are in the neighborhood be sure to stop by and smell the lilacs, they are pretty spectacular at the moment! If you can't get to the park you can check in on the lilac status here ~ maybe one day they'll even get a lilac cam!? Enjoy the views... Cheryl is setting up her own driveway/backyard/coy pond cam and we're testing it here:

Soon to have her own page ~ click here!

Thursday, May 8th, 2008 ~ A quiet day on the driveway, as Lilac Festival Eve often is. But out in the nests.... hatching is happening in Rochester, and there are chicks in the Minnesota nest!! (Although, as that site will tell you: BABY FALCONS are called eyasses. Newly hatched chicks are wet and covered with white down. But by three weeks of age, brownish juvenile feathers can be seen poking through the white fuzz. By five or six weeks of age, the white fuzz has been completely replaced by brown feathers. Eyases are helpless. One parent (often the female but sometimes the male) stays with the chicks while the other finds food for the brood. Eyases eat an incredible amount of food - but then, they double their weight in only six days and at three weeks will be ten times birth size. The eyases can be observed jumping around and testing their wings, getting ready to fly.) To round out your viewing, there is a new trial link to check out as well. Enjoy linking it ~

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008 ~ Running late for condo daze. A few quick views of the driveway and then it's off to the wilds of meeting land. And if you are stung by the splendour of a sudden thought, or otherwise feel the urge to wax poetically today, just go with it... for it's Mrs. Browning's husband's 196th birthday! Enjoy link hopping and the day ~

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008 ~ Hope everyone in Indiana and North Carolina is up early and voting as many times as it takes to have a clear cut winner. While here there is sunshine running down the driveway this morning before the rains wander in. Enjoy the views ~

Monday, May 5th, 2008 ~ Driveway Cam would like to welcome Ms. Chuk to her first full day of retirement! (just in time for cinco de mayo (no small coincidence we're sure)) But to the rest of you out there ... Driveway Cam would politely like to remind you that Hey! It's Monday morning!!! Time to get up and get viewing. Speaking of getting up, today is the anniversary of the 1961 launch of Freedom 7 and Alan Shepard, the first American in space. And now, on with the day ~

Sunday, May 4th, 2008 ~ Oops! Forgot to turn off the camera last night (so no new "first" picture of the morning today) and forgot to update the site until just now (7:39 PM) ~ must be the side effects from too many juleps. There seem to be egg fragments in the Minnesota nest - if you've spotted the chick(s) let us know. The turkey eggs on incubator cam are due to hatch on Monday and the rest of the nests should be hopping the next couple of weeks as well. We'll try to keep the tote board updated. Enjoy the views ~

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008 ~ And it's KY Derby Day! Which of course means it's just about time to figure out what horses are running and prepare to julep! (there is one here with your name on it so stop on by) Enjoy watching the Paddock Cam while picking out the winning horse ~ and if you aren't going to Churchill Downs maybe we'll see you at the OTB....

Friday, May 2nd, 2008 ~ As you recover from your May Day Celebrations you may want to check out Loch Ness today ~ the modern legend of the Loch Ness Monster was born when a couple's report of sighting the monster made it to the news on May 2, 1933. There has been no turning back. It's also Kentucky Oaks Day! And the trial cam has been changed to be the Churchill Downs Paddock Cam for at least the next couple of days. We're betting it could be a busy day out on all the links ~

Thursday, May 1st, 2008 ~ Happy Birthdays go to Ms Hannah today! Have a great day Hannah and a wonderful year ahead!!!!
And it's a Happy Birthday to the Empire State Building as well. The building, which is 58 years older than Hannah, was dedicated on May 1st 77 years ago ~ you can watch the building here or watch the view from it here . Whatever your perspective, enjoy the views ~

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008 ~ Luckily the couch fit up the steps so the "stand on the roof of the van" and/or the "very long planks and ropes" ideas didn't have to be employed. It's a condo meeting day so just a few views of the tree and driveway today. If anyone knows what today's picture is, or is for, on Google (at google.com) please oh please let me know. Have to run, enjoy the views ~

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008 ~ Today is couch moving day at Em's. One very twisty narrow staircase + one upper floor balcony destination point + one very dense loveseat can pose a bit of a problem. Luckily creative solutions and suggestions abound from the folks helping her. Hopefully you won't hear about it on the evening news and it will end with Em enjoying the summer on her couch, on her still intact balcony, and not visiting people recovering from injuries! :) (We'll keep you posted)

Monday, April 28th, 2008 ~ The last Monday in April is complete with some much needed April showers. Seems like there ought to be a song in that somewhere... Meanwhile over the weekend the 4th chick hatched in Cleveland! Enjoy the views ~

Sunday, April 27th, 2008 ~ From the history.com site: it was on this day in 4977 B.C., according to calculations by German mathematician and astronomer Johannes Kepler, that the universe was created?!!?!! (Had I known I would have sent a card.) If you bake a cake you may want to be just a bit over-generous on the 6,985 candles since, even though Kepler is considered a founder of modern science, scientists in the 20th century developed the Big Bang theory, which showed that his calculations were off by about 13.7 billion years. They didn't say he got the day wrong however.... Enjoy the views ~

Saturday, April 26th, 2008 ~ A quiet Saturday on the driveway (and for the tree which we are hoping really will bloom at some point). If the quiet is too much for you, and you need an action fix, check out the falcon nest in Cleveland ~ the 4th chick is due to hatch today! Enjoy the views ~

Friday, April 25th, 2008 ~ Today's serving of ice cream and cake is in honor of cousin Mike's birthday! Hope it's a good day and great year ahead Mike ~ It's also Oliver Cromwell's birthday (should you be looking for a justification for that 2nd piece of cake!) The driveway is still sharing the view with the tree while we watch for it to bloom - and there could be some rain to watch on them both this last Friday of the month. Enjoy ~

Thursday, April 24th, 2008 ~ A very Happy Birthday and Merry New Year to Allison today!! Have some cake and ice cream for all of us ~ And there are baby falcons in Cleveland!! You can see a picture of them on the tote board page or by clicking here. We do love chick season here on the driveway. Check out all of the nests we watch by going to the nest link page.

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008 ~ While the exact date may be unknown today is the official unofficial birthday of the Bard . From Writers Almanac: Shakespeare used one of the largest vocabularies of any English writer, almost 30,000 words, (drivewaycam note: one count puts it at 29,066 ~ a nice yardstick to measure against should you do your own count...) and he was the first writer to invent or record many of our most common turns of phrase, including "foul play," "as luck would have it," "your own flesh and blood," "too much of a good thing," "good riddance," "in one fell swoop," "cruel to be kind," "play fast and loose," "vanish into thin air," "the game is up," "truth will out" and "in the twinkling of an eye." To celebrate, and to make up for the fact that the PC has to go to a meeting today, we bring out of retirement, for a limited engagement, one of our favorites... The Shakespeare Insult Generator!!! Enjoy the views you muddy-mettled rascals ~ (from Hamlet)

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 ~ It's Earth Day today! A good day to not watch through windows, virtual or otherwise, rather, get outside and enjoy the views that way. [Driveway Cam is going to be tree cam today for everyone who can't get out to frolic.]

Monday, April 21st, 2008 ~ Monday? Already?!? First, a toast - A very Happy Birthday to Elizabeth II who turns 82 today. "Elizabeth!" The falcon chick season is on the brink of beginning as we wait for the arrival of the first chick in Cleveland. If you can't wait, and you need a falcon chick fix ~ right now ~ check out some of the European nests via the nesting bird list (which is at the bottom of the nest/tote board page). The peregrine falcon section is not quite halfway down that list. There are chicks in nests in the Netherlands and in Germany and if you find others let us know.

Sunday, April 20th, 2008 ~ A slow but sunny day on the driveway is due up. No record breaking temperatures today but still a lovely day to check in on all the links while we wait for the first falcon chick in Cleveland which should be here any time ~ but not quite yet according to this picture from this morning.

Saturday, April 19th, 2008 ~ Another nice day here, and our sincere thanks to who(m)(?)ever has loaned us their weather! Hope your Saturday is a good one too. National Library Week closes today, but it's always a good time to go to you local library. And today is the anniversary of the first Boston Marathon held in 1897. So while you are running around today be sure to pace yourselves, and remember it's the last 25 miles that get you ~ Enjoy the views!

Friday, April 18th, 2008 ~ Hey it's Friday!! It's also the anniversary of the Midnight Ride of Paul Revere (and William Dawes) as well as another sunny day on the driveway. There are ducklings on the incubator egg cam, and the first falcon hatching is due any day in Cleveland. So many views, so little time and a new quiz to boot! Enjoy ~

Thursday, April 17th, 2008 ~ The sun continues to pour down on the driveway and it is the 71st anniversary today of the first appearance of Daffy Duck! Back in 1937 movie goers were introduced to a new guy on the block as Daffy Duck appeared in the short cartoon Porky's Duck Hunt. And something tells me that this little black duck will never wear out his welcome. Enjoy the views ~

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008 ~ There should be sunshine falling all over the driveway to watch today. The ice-out contest in Maine is heating up...it's too late to enter but it's still fun to watch. Combine that with nest hopping and it must be spring on driveway cam! Enjoy the views and don't forget to visit your local library at least once this week! ~

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008 ~ Today is National Library Workers Day ! Be sure to appreciate your library workers today (they like shiny things and books returned on time). And in keeping with the whole National Library Week thing here is a page of links to libraries to watch, just in case you don't keep a list of your own...hard to imagine but you never know. Enjoy the views and either the calm of having your taxes done and mailed or the sheer exhilaration of trying to get them done and mailed by midnight ~

Monday, April 14th, 2008 ~ Welcome to National Library Week! Driveway Cam hopes you all take time this week to go check out your local library, and perhaps even take it to lunch to show it your appreciation?! Okay, so maybe visit the library and take a library worker to lunch but in any case (book or otherwise) please support your local libraries. Feel free to send in pictures of your library and here are a couple of links for library watching in the meantime: the UMD one of course and one from CSU at Chico. Enjoy the views ~

Sunday, April 13th, 2008 ~ It's a very quiet Sunday here on the driveway ~ a roofers free zone has been re-established!! Enjoy the views ~

Saturday, April 12th, 2008 ~ It's one of those days in history that is just so chock full of events one doesn't know where to begin. So we'll work our way backwards and our apologies for any 'events' that get left out (the pounding continues, tho' they swear today is the last day, is our only excuse). On this date in 1981 the space shuttle Columbia launched from Cape Canaveral, becoming the first reusable manned spacecraft to travel into space...20 years earlier to the day Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human being, and therefore the first reusable astronaut, to travel into space...back in 1945 on this date President Franklin D. Roosevelt died after suffering a stroke...while back in 1861 the first shots of the Civil War were fired on Fort Sumter on this day...farther back, on April 12th 1633, Galileo Galilei was put on trial by the Inquisition for supporting the theory that the Earth revolves around the sun and lastly, but most importantly, some where back around the time that, well, that time was created, Pebble was born!!! Happy Birthday Amanda ~ from everyone on both sides of driveway cam!!! :)

Friday, April 11th, 2008 ~ Yep, that's rain. Nope, they're not finished. But the good news (?) is we'll learn the truth about the waterproofing they've been using. The 3rd chick hatched in the Colorado eagles nest, they are remarkably cute. Don't know if the PC and I have to go to the library today or not, but I really enjoyed the library link yesterday so here it is again. Hopefully you all enjoyed it too. And here is to everyone hopefully staying dry today with all the rain due all over the place. Enjoy the views ~

Thursday, April 10th, 2008 ~ It's going to be another run for the hills (or library in this case) day ~ but hopefully it will be the last day of roofing. Today is the anniversary of the day that the R.M.S. Titanic departed Southampton, England, in 1912, on its maiden voyage across the Atlantic. It was supposed to arrive in New York City on April 15th. There is a new quiz for today, a new trial site and there are new egg pictures as the totals continue to climb . Lots to watch and do and check out (!) while the PC runs and hides in a library (not this one but ours has the same chairs... ) ~

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008 ~ Don't tell anyone but today Kathy T. (nee H) turns 50!!!!!!!!! Hard to believe another one of those darling little Wright Drive Cutie Pies hit the 1/2 century mark but it's true! So a very Happy Birthday Kathy from everyone here on driveway cam and, in point of fact from everyone, every where! Have a wonderful day ~
[Today it's the roof right over my office so the PC and I are hitting the road ~ sorry for the lack of driveway pictures but you can imagine what it looks like (and for sound effects just drop your head on your desk repeatedly!)]

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008 ~ The beat goes on (or perhaps it's the pounding that goes on?) and there are now 2 eagle chicks in Colorado and eggs a plenty 'round the other nests! We had clouds last night but hopefully it will clear up for tonight's showing of the 'delicate conjunction of Luna and the Seven Sisters'. If you happened to get pictures last night, or do tonight send them in ~ we'd love to see them!

Monday, April 7th, 2008 ~ It's the start of New Roof Week here on drivewaycam.....too bad there isn't audio so you can hear the rather large pounding and thumping (and tearing off at the moment) that is going on. Updates every 7 minutes just for the thrill of it?! And a Happy Birthday to William Wordsworth today (apologies for using last years birthday link). Enjoy the views and looking for daffodils!

Sunday, April 6th, 2008 ~ Whatever side of the 'got to the North Pole first' coin you are on (Benedict, Cook, Fletcher, Kuznetsov or Peary) today is the 99th anniversary of the day Peary and Henson finished racing across hundreds of miles of ice to reach what they calculated as latitude 90 degrees north on April 6, 1909. Congress entered the Cook/Peary dispute and in 1911 formally recognized Peary's claim. And speaking of races heating up...(?)....There are eggs all over the place and a new eagle chick out in Colorado!!! Check the egg tote board for updates and if you find some eggs or chicks we missed let us know ~

Saturday, April 5th, 2008 ~ The showers are on hold for the next few days, and spring is starting to get a toe hold here, in the nests, and in many of the favorite views out there. And today is the birthday of philosopher Thomas Hobbes without whom we would have never gotten to the philosophy of Calvin and Hobbes...So, Happy Birthday and thanks to Thomas, and in parting, some of the wisdom of Calvin and Hobbes: Weekends don't count unless you spend them doing something completely pointless.

Friday, April 4th, 2008 ~ All driveway all the time today! And some April showers thrown in for good measure ~

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008 ~ It's a few updates Thursday as the PC heads out for the last day of meetings this week. Enjoy morning on the driveway, and anywhere else that you spot it, and all the rest of your views today ~ Washington DC 7:00 AM 4/3/8 from the air quality cam:

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008 ~ Sorry ~ running late today, don't have the camera hooked up to the PC this morning. But there are plenty of other links to watch while the driveway is in seclusion (so to speak). If you are wanting to celebrate it is the birthday of both Charlemagne and Hans Christian Anderson today while back in 1513 rumor has it that on this date Florida was claimed for Spain by Ponce de Leon. (Spain kept Florida until the US gained control in 1819 ~ the US kept control, so some have said*, until November 2000)(*drivewaycam has no political affiliations at all and merely reports the rumors as overheard around the driveway)

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008 ~ From all the phools on this side of the camera A Very Merry April Fool's Day! The PC has to attend an all day meeting (the first of 3) so it's just a few updates before it leaves. (nope, not a joke). Until the PC returns this evening enjoy your favorite links and don't forget to taste the sugar *before* you put it in your coffee! :)

Monday, March 31st, 2008 ~ Fast away is March passing with this one last day to watch it on the driveway. Should be the last of the snow today as well with the rumor of 50 degree temperatures due here. It's always fun to watch snow melt....just be sure to pace yourselves. And the feature link today is the Eiffel Tower as today is the 119th anniversary it's inauguration and opening ~

Sunday, March 30th, 2008 ~ The last Sunday of the month and driveway cam and the PC aren't speaking to each other. Today looks a lot like yesterday did, and hopefully things will get sorted out soon. In the meantime, enjoy the Cherry Blossoms ~ here again is the web cam of them run by the parks department....when you get to the site click on launch, and/or the nests, and any of your other favorite sites. Enjoy!

Saturday, March 29th, 2008 ~ Another Saturday here on the driveway ~ complete with more snow to watch melt. Eight teams left in March Madness and while we have great affection and fondness for our KY kith and kin... GO TARHEELS!! is about all we are going to say on that subject. According to Google it's Earth Hour day (night) tonight: On Saturday, March 29, 2008, Earth Hour invites people around the world to turn off their lights for one hour – from 8:00pm to 9:00pm in their local time zone. On this day, cities around the world, including Copenhagen, Chicago, Melbourne, Dubai, and Tel Aviv, will hold events to acknowledge their commitment to energy conservation. And finally if you can't get to DC for the Cherry Blossoms ~ here is a web cam of them run by the parks department....just click on launch and enjoy!

Friday, March 28th, 2008 ~ Welcome to Friday on the driveway and day 2 of the Sweet 16! (We sure wish CBS would let us watch UNC play once in a while; maybe next round!?!) In the meantime we have snow to watch come and go, just like everything on the driveway. Enjoy the views ~

Thursday, March 27th, 2008 ~ Slow day on the driveway - but things are hopping in the nests. [Latest update: Rochester has joined the egg race and the owl chicks are getting big!] And a rousing chorus of Happy Birthday for Patty Smith Hill, born on this day in Anchorage, Kentucky in 1868 ~ she is the woman who wrote the song Happy Birthday so stand up straight and use your outside voices. :)

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008 ~ Quite the collection of birthdays today....Joseph Campbell, Tennessee Williams and Robert Frost. And on top of that the 4th egg was spotted at the Cleveland nest! Enjoy unraveling your own myths and stories today and of course the views ~

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008 ~ Sorry for the lack of text update...been fighting, and losing to, some sort of bug. So while the camera has been rolling, the editor has not. However, we're back (mostly) and hope that you're enjoying the views ~ Rumor is there are 4 eggs in the Cleveland nest, if you see them let us know.

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008 ~ Happy Easter to one and all! Hopefully you've found all your eggs and put them in your basket (which is perfectly okay to do when they are Easter eggs!) Speaking of OK - back in 1839, on this very day, the word OK was first published, as a joke and of course there has been no turning back. But what is back however is EGG CAM! So, between the nests, the baskets, and the chocolate haze... Have a great day and enjoy the views ~

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008 ~ Many trips (at least 2!) down and back up the driveway today, some egg dying behind the camera and sunshine for a fare-thee-well is the rumor for 'round these parts. Hope your brackets are holding up ~

Friday, March 21st, 2008 ~ Today is all for Ms. Lydia as she turns 17!!!! Happy Birthday Lydia ~ we all wish you the best year ahead!! To help Lydia celebrate let's have a Full Moon tonight - the Sunday following this full moon (called among other things either The Full Worm Moon (to mark the return of earthworms and robins), or The Full Crow Moon (as the cawing of crows now signals the end of winter), or The Full Sap Moon (marks the time of tapping maple trees)) is Easter and in case it surprised you by getting here so soon, it's the earliest Easter since 1913! We are also planning 16 basketball games in her honor and of course a full day of driveway. Have a good Good Friday and enjoy the views ~

Thursday, March 20th, 2008 ~ Spring is gespronging today ~ set your eggs on their ends and enjoy the Vernal Equinox!! A little spring cleanup of the site has taken place... there is a new traffic cams link (for Louisville), the countdown clock now has a permanent location in the table (due to popular demand), and there is a new trial site to check out. [If you were hooked on the bear cam, it's moved to the retired links page.] It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood, somewhere, and Mister Roger's birthday as well, so with winter behind us now (!?) enjoy any spring like views you find out there ~

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008 ~ Arthur C Clarke passed away yesterday, which is harder to imagine than anything he ever wrote about. Can't pick just one favorite story but if you haven't read his short story The Nine Billion Names of God , there is no time like the present. And if you want more to read, a list of all his writings can be found on his site.

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008 ~ The opening round of March Madness is played today in Dayton but the main action doesn't get underway until Thursday...so there is still time to fill out your brackets. And from the Most Splendid News department (MSND) comes this update: There are owl chicks in Colorado!!! According to the information on that site: Baby owls are in the box. The first egg hatched the afternoon of March 13 after 34 days of incubation, and the second egg sometime during the morning of March 15. We have about eight weeks now to watch them grow before fledging in early May.

Check them out on the Nests/EggTote link below, as well as the rest of the nests (there is an egg in the Cleveland Falcon nest (first falcon egg of the Driveway Cam viewing season)) and enjoy the views ~

Monday, March 17th, 2008 ~ The happiest of birthday's to Mike today! Hope it's a great year for you!!!
And of course a happy St. Patrick's Day to one and all. As a change from the corn beef and cabbage you might want to try some of these honorable St. Paddy recipes?!! And time differences aside, here are some live views of Dublin (no, not in Ohio), Ireland! (O'Sheas's Pub should be hopping) Top o' the views to you ~

Sunday, March 16th, 2008 ~ Well this really is a red letter day! (2 in one month (may be a new record)). The Scarlet Letter was published 158 years ago today. And the frosting on that cake is that it's snowing (always good), there are 3 (!) eggs in the (previously named) storks nest 2 in Germany, **AND** it's Bracket Day!! (can madness be far behind?)

Saturday, March 15th, 2008 ~ The Ides of March they are upon us ~ and with them the storms in the Atlanta area and the fog covering parts of the Midwest ~ so superstitious or not you may want to exercise caution today (actually caution needs at least 30 minutes of exercise every day according to the latest from the AMA .....)

Friday, March 14th, 2008 ~ Some days are just made for Driveway Cam.....It's a Friday, there is snow melting on the driveway to watch, it's Einstein's birthday and it's PI day!!!! At 1:59 today it will be PI to 5 places [3.14159] ~ if you want to re-live that moment all over again (and who wouldn't) wait until 9 minutes after 3 (military time) and you can PI to 5 places again!...in fact we can PI to 5 through all the time zones too! Enjoy your pi and the views ~

Thursday, March 13th, 2008 ~ Running late, few updates Thursday is upon the driveway once again, which leaves lots of time for nest hopping......

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008 ~ A slow day on the driveway should allow plenty of time to wish a very Happy Birthday to the Girl Scouts, Jack Kerouac and James Taylor (now there is a weird combo) and to today's theme song...Fanfare for the Common Man by Aaron Copland, performed for the first time today in 1943 by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008 ~ It's a great day for science and fiction and all points in-between. The shuttle lifted off this morning in a lovely night launch, it's the birthday of Douglas Adams (if you haven't read Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy yet...get thee to a copy of it at once!), and it is the anniversary of the publishing of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein . Enjoy all the views today from this mostly harmless planet ~

Monday, March 10th, 2008 ~ How many of us were out making snow angels this weekend? Show of hands? Got a couple of pictures in, and posted . If you have some of your snowy weekend, send 'em in. While everyone has been shoveling, the Colorado eagles now have 3 eggs in the nest! The Rochester Falcon cam is back online today, the Cleveland nest is still under snow but there was a falcon on the ledge, which is interestingly completely snow free, this morning in Columbus. (Nest hopping is a great way to fight off snow blindness by the by) Welcome to Monday and enjoy the views ~

Sunday, March 9th, 2008 ~ Driveway cam's windows still have some ice on them so for a little while at least today it's more bird feeder cam. We missed the big storm, or it missed us, or maybe it just ran out of snow by the time it was done burying Columbus, Cincinnati, Louisville and points south? We did get a nice covering of it here and it's very pretty, but we'd still love to see what all of you are looking at today out your windows. [loosely translated: please take a picture or two and send them in] Stay warm, and if you are in the new snow belt area or not watch the roads out there! Enjoy the views ~

Saturday, March 8th, 2008 ~ Hope everyone is enjoying the weather (!?!). Driveway cam would love to see what it looks like out your window, or on your driveway this weekend. Send in some pictures of your views this weekend and we'll get them posted. Long time viewers, or passersby, snow or ice or tulips, cell phone or digital camera or even artists rendition! Let us know "what's the weather" where you are. If you are staying inside and wondering what to read, today is the birthday of Kenneth Grahame, and a little Wind in the Willows might block out the wind in your neighborhood for a while. And when you take a break from reading, or sledding, or slipping, or napping ~ try Quiz 5. Enjoy, and send in the views! (Freezing rains have closed up driveway cam's view...so it's going to be bird feeder cam for a while, then maybe front flower bed cam or deck cam or who knows what we'll watch cam! Started posting pictures from afar , so we can all see what we're all looking at out there!)

Friday, March 7th, 2008 ~ A Friday, a winter storm is running amok, and is headed this way, there are eggs in 2 nests ~ it can only mean it's shaping up to be a good day here on driveway cam. Besides the above making it a red letter day, it was back on this day in 1876 that Alexander Graham Bell got his patent for the telephone. And it was 47 years later on this day that Robert Frost's poem 'Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening' was first published. In a cruel twist of fate, Robert Frost's poem fits perfectly as lyrics to the tune Oh Tannenbaum ~ don't fight it, you're going to try it and it's going to get stuck in your head, and the only cure (we've been told) is to pass the curse on....may we suggest calling someone one and singing it to them? And now, on with the views ~

Thursday, March 6th, 2008 ~ It's a few-updates-thursday on this side of the driveway ~ but not being glued to the ever changing vista of the driveway will give you lots of time to read some Elizabeth Barrett Browning in honor of her birthday today! (and/or crank up the stereo and listen to 'Robert and Elizabeth' if you have a copy....) Enjoy the views, and the poetry ~

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 ~ Oh Happy middle of the week and soon to be turning the corner to the weekend Day. Enjoy the views ~

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008 ~ Hope everyone got outside yesterday to enjoy spring (if it visited in your area) and that everyone stays inside today to enjoy the return of winter (coming to, or already at most areas). Not sure what we'll end up with weather wise today, but rest assured there will be some weather of one kind or another rolling, sliding, or drifting, on down the driveway for your viewing pleasure ~

Monday, March 3rd, 2008 ~ It's Read Across America Day today, grab a book and participate when you can. It's also Watch the Snow Melt day here on the driveway... busy day all around ~

Sunday, March 2nd, 2008 ~ Quiz Day! Quiz Day? Can it be? Quiz time? Right now? For you? For Me? Why yes! It is! The time is now. Put down the mouse, take off that scowl. For Seuss was born, this day of days. So quiz we will, click right this way ~

Saturday, March 1st, 2008 ~ March is........ A musical form metered in two in which each large section is played twice: AA BB CC DD. ...The month following February and preceding April ...To border: lie adjacent to another or share a boundary ...To walk fast, with regular or measured steps; walk with a stride ...A district in Canton of Schwyz, Switzerland ...A progression of muscular convulsions from one muscle or muscle group to another ............Here!

Friday, February 29th 2008 ~ Welcome to the day that's been four years in the making. We've been collecting an extra 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 45 seconds every year for 4 years(***) while we've been running around the sun and now it's time to break open the bank and spend it! All of driveway cam hopes your leap day views are more than worth the wait. Enjoy!!

Thursday, February 28th 2008 ~ It's ridiculously cold. And sadly, there is a meeting out there waiting for the PC this morning. But enough said about that! Today is the anniversary of the day in 1953 when Watson and Crick figured out that the structure of DNA was a double-helix polymer, or a spiral of two DNA strands. Their discovery answered at least 2 age old questions that had confounded mankind ... how is heredity information passed among generations and of course the even bigger mystery: Where do genes go when they retire from the human genetic pool? The answer is just a click away. Stay warm and enjoy the views ~

Wednesday, February 27th 2008 ~ While we didn't get everything they predicted we do have the ground covered plus a little more, and our hopes are that it continues to snow today. Which contrasts a little with the report out of North Carolina that "the daffodils are out in full force at the moment, and something pink is taking over a few of the bare trees". Whatever your ground cover is today, or is seen to be 'round the net, enjoy the views!

Tuesday, February 26th 2008 ~ (The snow has started to arrive. We're being very quiet so we don't scare it away). Today is the 79th birthday of the Grand Teton National Park, signed into existence by Calvin Coolidge back in 1929 ~ and even if you can't make it out there today to celebrate, you can check in on the festivities here or here or here or here.. Enjoy the views ~

Monday, February 25th 2008 ~ Monday's hurt. Got the camera on, forgot to update the note..... We do have sunshine today on the driveway and the probably empty threat of snow tomorrow, but for now it's a lovely day out there (for a Monday).

Sunday, February 24th 2008 ~ While the storm out west heads this way....

should be a good day for viewing all over the place! A couple possibly good snow out west watching sites are here and here. And here on the driveway this afternoon (sometime between 12 and 5)(!) a new 'fridge is to show up, as the old one moves on to other adventures. picture from NOAA web site, water vapor section

Saturday, February 23rd 2008 ~ A very Happy Birthday to Lynn!!! Hope it's a great one for you! And now, onto Saturday on the driveway ~

Friday, February 22nd 2008 ~ It's Friday *and* it's George Washington's birthday! A great combo (of course anything mixed with Friday works well....) For 10 things you didn't know about old George check out this link while you are checking out your other favorite links. If it's not on the date February 22 when you get there you can look it up in their archives. Enjoy the views ~

Thursday, February 21st 2008 ~ A very Happy Birthday to Aunt Joyce today!!!!! Hope it's the start of a great year for you! And if you didn't get to see the eclipse, or even if you did, there is a new page in the family pages, which you can also get to by clicking HERE , that is a collection of pictures taken last night by some driveway cam viewers who were kind enough to send them in. Enjoy them and the views and cake all around in honor of Aunt Joyce!!

Wednesday, February 20th 2008 ~ It's total lunar eclipse day! Check out SpaceWeather.com for the details but for eastern time zone folks the eclipse starts around 8:43, is ~total~ from about 10:00 to 10:50, and is completely over by 12:00 tonight. If it's clear be sure to check it out, sounds like it's going to be a good one. And if it's not clear or you can't get out ~ there are (of course!) live cam sites you can visit. These are courtesy of SpaceWeather.com. View the eclipse live from Iran, or, Norway or, from Holland or Belgium or closer to home Georgia. Enjoy all the views, online, outside, down and up today (and tonight)!

Tuesday, February 19th 2008 ~ Enjoy the views on this cold and windy Tuesday.........most of the views are snow covered this morning but you can always check out hotter climes ~ time zones make hopping heat sites slightly more challenging but they are out there. There is the beach, or the Pyramids where it's a little warmer, and if they're not warm enough you can always stop off at Hawaii's volcano cam !

Monday, February 18th 2008 ~ Happy Bank Holiday! While not actually the birthday of any president today, it is the birthday of the large object with a moon, that orbits our sun, that was previously known as the Planet Pluto. It was discovered, as a planet, in 1930 but under revised planet specifications lost it's title in 2006. (many of us however will always believe we have 9 planets in our solar system; we may find more (though we aren't jumping on that Eris/UB313 bandwagon just yet) but we aren't about to lose any on a technical call from the officials) The good news is that it will take about 421 years for Pluto to hear that news (baring any improvements in the speed of sound) so they still don't know they aren't a planet! And they won't even when the ship New Horizons, which is carrying the ashes of the man who discovered Pluto, Clyde Tombaugh, will pass by them July 14, 2015. (mark your calendars!!)

Sunday, February 17th 2008 ~ Another pleasant valley Sunday unfolding (or in this case sliding) on the driveway ~ rain is due in some time today. If you need to plan your viewing day they say it's due in this afternoon. Might be a good day to play 'Where is the sun shining?'. Checked Antarctica, Georgia, and the Pyramids earlier and it's not there ~ although it didn't look too bad in the village behind the storks nest. If you find it, let us know.

Saturday, February 16th 2008 ~ All's quiet on the driveway front at the moment, a few trips out and back are planned, and a few more may just happen ~ you never know. From the penguins to Loch Ness, here's to the penultimate Saturday of February being a good one all around. (it does look like a lovely afternoon there in Scotland......)

Friday, February 15th 2008 ~ A salute to our friends in the north and their Maple Leaf flag which was adopted after a search that lasted from 1925 until the design was adopted by their Parliament in 1964 and Queen Elizabeth II proclaimed February 15, 1965, as the day on which the new flag would be raised over Parliament Hill and adopted by all Canadians. (admit it, you're humming Oh Canada aren't you). Enjoy the views eh?(with thanks to history.com)

Thursday, February 14th 2008 ~ A very Happy Valentine's Day !! (the PC is being dragged, kicking and screaming, to a meeting today, so only a few pictures of the driveway this morning ~ But enjoy them and all of the other views too!)

Wednesday, February 13th 2008 ~ With all the bad weather going on out there .... driveway cam recommends you stay inside today, surf the links, nap when you can. The owl's nest now has 2 eggs, so forget scraping ice off your car and do some nest hopping instead. (Be sure to cough when you call work to tell them you are staying home, and don't mention the s-u-r-f-i-n-g). Enjoy the views ~

Tuesday, February 12th 2008 ~ Hope everyone in the winter blast area is keeping warm and off the roads! A tip of the stove pipe hat to Abraham Lincoln today in honor of his birthday. And in honor of his birthday...A quiz!!! So whether you are surfing at home or at the office ~ enjoy the views and good luck on the quiz.

Monday, February 11th 2008 ~ The Happiest of Birthdays today for Jessie! Have a wonderful day!!!! Some changes in the links below to make room for the nest list/egg tote board, to try out a new trial link, and to retire, we hope temporarily, the gas station cam which has sadly gone missing. Retired links are on the retired links page, new ones are in their places, and now, on to nest hopping season!

Sunday, February 10th 2008 ~ Could be snow to watch today, and of course you can watch the temperature fall all over the driveway too(?). Nest news: saw last night that there is an egg in the Colorado Owl's Nest!! Started work on getting the 2008 Egg Tote Board up and running ~ it will be in place soon (it needs a little dusting off and oiling to get it going). Stay warm and enjoy the views....

Saturday, February 9th 2008 ~ A little snow today, more due tomorrow along with a 30+ degree drop in temperature. Ah winter. Enjoy the views!

Friday, February 8th 2008 ~ Good things do come to those who wait.....it's Friday! Enjoy the views and the end of the week. And the Shuttle is back up (yay!!!) check link for times in your area to view it, and the space station going overhead ~

Thursday, February 7th 2008 ~ Hope all our viewers made it through the storms intact and that the new Year of the Rat starting today is a great year for us all. Tip of the hat today to Charles Dickens and The Beatles ~ one arrived on the planet in 1812 and one in New York in 1964, both on this day. And a New Year Bonus....Don't know exactly when the close up cameras came back online in the Antarctic but they are - found them last night!! Enjoy ~

Wednesday, February 6th 2008 ~ A rainy, icy, sleety, (sleety?) snowy, windy, Ash Wednesday is due up on the driveway today. Happy (and hopefully warm and dry) viewing!(We may just stay inside and drink tea with our pinkies up in honor of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation which was 56 years ago today, and also in honor of the Miller's move to England which began 43 years ago today.)

Tuesday, February 5th 2008 ~ Certainly feels like a super Tuesday...and if you live in either Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Utah, or West Virginia and you belong to the party or parties holding a primary or caucus in your state, please put your mouse down and get out there and vote!!!! Then come back and enjoy the views ~ there is a flood watch in effect as the snow melts and the rains come down today, so keep an eye on the driveway, you never know what might float by!

Monday, February 4th 2008 ~ A quiet Monday to start the week, and with 'super Tuesday' looming, a brief reminder of how we got started down this path....it was on this day in 1789 that the Electoral College unanimously elected George Washington as the first president of the United States.

Sunday, February 3rd 2008 ~ Let it be known that at 6:31 this evening Ms. Em will complete her 28th trip around the sun!!!!! And if you think, as I do, that her 16,352,564,984 mile journey so far has gone quickly... well, it has! She's been racing around at 18 1/2 miles per second (and we have been racing right along with her). So, here is to taking 133,200 miles or so off today, to have some ice cream and cake to celebrate. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Birthday Emily !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We all hope the next 584,020,178 miles, and all of the rest of the miles to come for that matter, are great ones for you ~

Saturday, February 2nd 2008 ~ For the 111th time a little groundhog in PA, the Seer of Seers, Prognosticator of all Prognosticators, has made his prediction...(way before those of us on this side of the camera were awake!)...and it's 6 more weeks of winter ahead!! We are pleased as punch and hope Phil is tucked back in, and is getting to rest once again. We even have some snow, finally, to help with celebrations 'round these parts! Enjoy the views ~

Friday, February 1st, 2008 ~ Bunny! Bunny! Bunny! (sometimes we can't resist the old traditions). Today if you feel like singing in the rain (or sleet as the case may be) don't fight it, go with it....it is the 79th anniversary of Hollywood's first original film musical, "The Broadway Melody". And as it turns out it is also the 219th anniversary of the first run of the Supreme Court staring John Jay in the lead role of Chief Justice. The movie went on to be the first sound picture to win an Oscar for Best Picture. The Supreme Court, deciding on another career path, became "arguably the most powerful judicial body in the world in terms of its central place in the U.S. political order." With thanks to history.com we'll leave you humming your favorite tunes and decisions and hope you Enjoy the views ~

Thursday, January 31st, 2008 ~ It's the end of the month as we know it, and we feel fine ~ Short driveway viewing day today, PC has places to go, people to meet...however, you may have heard, THE STORKS ARE BACK! So should the granite in the trial link get to be too much for you today just click here and start your stork watching early this year! Enjoy the views ~

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008 ~ Another listen-to-the-howling, feel-the-house-shaking, windy Wednesday as the winds that whipped through the Midwest come for a visit. Back in 1933 on this day the call "Hi-ho, Silver! Away!" was heard for the first time as the Lone Ranger began on WXYZ radio in Detroit. While just one year later on this day it was Gold that went away and headed for the hills, as the Gold Reserve Act was passed which soon had gold nationalized and handed over to the US Treasury who decided to store much of it in Fort Knox. And before we blow away it's time to get the camera rolling on the driveway so you can watch whatever zooms by ~

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008 ~ It is, once again, the anniversary of the birthdays of Thomas Paine and Edward Abbey (2 of my favorite revolutionaries) As well as being the anniversary of the publishing of Poe's poem The Raven. Drinks all around!(But please don't mix drinking and wandering the links. Find a designated mouser before you decide to get out on the information superhighway) Last words today go to Paine and Abbey ~ "We have it in our power to begin the world over again" - Thomas Paine "May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds" - Edward Abbey

Monday, January 28th, 2008 ~ We wish you a Merry Monday and a Happy Last Week of the Month (sing the last 5 words very fast and they mostly fit) ~ Thanks to wondering about the google logo today some surfing reveals that the modern Lego brick was patented today back in 1958, and bricks from that year are still compatible with bricks today!!! Happy 50th Lego Brick!!! Here are some Lego Views for the occasion [And after exhaustive, extensive, and exculpatory discussion, research and review, 2 independent (online) sources named The Pleasure Garden as Hitchcock's first film so the winner of last weeks quiz is officially Cheryl. Congratulations to her and a "you'll get her next time" to Christopher and to all our viewers. (sources were IMDB and History.com) You can check all quizzes and results in the links at the bottom of the table below.]

Sunday, January 27th, 2008 ~ Back in November (the 26th of that month), you remember when the fact checkers were on strike, driveway cam erroneously reported that it was Lewis Carroll's birthday. That was instead the day he presented his book Alice's Adventures In Wonderland to his bosses daughter, Alice. Today is actually his birthday and as such ~ we apologize for the mistake, and any party planning problems that it may have incited and we hope that everyone takes a cue from Alice and has an adventurous day *today* going down a rabbit hole or not. And wherever you end up, enjoy the views ~

Saturday, January 26th, 2008 ~ Last Saturday of the month already!? How did that happen?!? There are some new links down at the bottom of the table to celebrate ~ some quiz related links and one for doing trial runs of new possible links. First trial link is a lighthouse on Granite Island in Lake Superior sort of in the vicinity of Marquette, MI. There are 9 web cams there with some very interesting views; some which may even be just interesting enough to make it to permanent drivewaycam link status, like #4 in the trial link. But try them all, see what you think. Enjoy the day and the views ~

Friday, January 25th, 2008 ~ A slight shift in the universe brings us driveway views all day! (Some times universal shifts are good things) Meanwhile the judges are working over who the actual winner (or winners) of yesterday's quiz will turn out to be. Differing information sources are being reviewed and results will be final.... at some point. But it's Friday after all and time for some serious surfing! Enjoy ~

Thursday, January 24th, 2008 ~ While there may not be much in the way of driveway pictures today...there is much to celebrate as today is the 81st anniversary of the release of Alfred Hitchock's first film and is also the 73rd anniversary of canned beer, which made it's debut in Richmond, Virginia back in 1935. And while you ponder that (and the views) try out today's quiz.......

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008 ~ A very Happy Birthday to Patti Beth today! We all hope it's a great start to a great year ahead for you!!! Just a couple of driveway shots before the PC leaves, so you can see we did get a light dusting of snow ~ and here is a little picture (from Wikipedia) for PattiBeth's birthday and for us all, from Manet, whose birthday is also today. Enjoy the views!

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008 ~ 1:55 PM - oops! forgot to update today's note. Tuesdays can get so confusing some times. The PC is traveling again this week, but not much is happening on the driveway anyway (compared to the normal frenetic pace there) so you have lots of time to catch up on your other favorite views. Speaking of which, it's a full moon tonight! Get out and howl if you can ~

Monday, January 21st, 2008 ~ Happy Martin Luther King Jr Day! If you have today off you'll have plenty of time to catch up on all your favorite sites and to check into snow fall 'round the country. Either by checking the various cams we link to here or by going to
this site for all the skinny on snow depth

Sunday, January 20th, 2008 ~ The winds shifted as they often do, more from the west now, less from the north, and the 1-3 feet of snow that is out there somewhere is going elsewhere this weekend (which you can watch by clicking this link).....but driveway cam is here, in the land that snow forgot, watching the driveway with you, just in case they shift again.

Saturday, January 19th, 2008 ~ It is Saturday!!! And so there are several trips out and back in the works that just may come to pass. And thanks to Writer's Almanac for reminding us that today is the birthday of Edgar Allan Poe, a favorite on this side of the driveway and perhaps on your side too. It is Mr. Poe who said: "All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream." Enjoy the views ~

Friday, January 18th, 2008 ~ A late start at this update, and no driveway pictures at all as the PC left when it was still dark outside. Hope everyone has a lovely Friday. In between links you might want to read some Winnie The Pooh today, it's AA Milne's birthday! ~

Thursday, January 17th, 2008 ~ A tip of the hat today to Benjamin Franklin, who was born on this day back in 1706. Among many other things we can thank him for his safe and very heat efficient stove, for fire departments, and for bifocals which help some of us (!) every day to check out the driveway and all of our other favorite views ~

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008 ~ Hey! There is a new cheddar in town! A new block of cheddar is now on camera ~ in the very early stages of aging. You'll want to check in on it I'm sure. But as always, pace yourself while viewing. It's another day at the office (condo) so not much driveway today but that leaves lots of time for penguins, snow all over the place, and cheese watching. It's perfect middle-of-the-week and too-cold-to-play-outside viewing, so grab some hot chocolate, a warm sweather and view away ~

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008 ~ Condo day today, so just a couple of morning shots of the driveway and then you are left to your own devices....well, you are actually always left to your own devices come to think of it... okay so I guess you are left to your other favorite views ~

Monday, January 14th, 2008 ~ Another Monday (the second one of the year already!) rolls on down the driveway ~

Sunday, January 13th, 2008 ~ Spring continues here, but rumor has it not for much longer thank goodness. However, today you may see squirrels and other woodland creatures frolicking, tulips blooming and cartoon birds flying about (anything can happen when spring is in January). Enjoy and fingers crossed that snow will return ~

Saturday, January 12th, 2008 ~ It's the weekend!!! Enjoy viewing and napping and viewing and napping and........................

Friday, January 11th, 2008 ~ The driveway is back ~ and just in time to round out your end of the work week, beginning of the weekend viewing! Enjoy ~

Thursday, January 10th, 2008 ~ A little driveway and all the other views you can use on this climatically much calmer day ~ the close up Penguin camera got knocked out in a storm down there yesterday and is out for the season but the other cameras are still working (at least at the moment) so we can watch the chicks grow, just not as closely. Enjoy the views ~

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008 ~ Meetings continue so no viewing of the day blowing past the driveway in it's house-shaking, metal-table-flipping-up-over-and-off-the-deck way today. Hope everyone managed to hang on to their hats as this front has been tromping it's way through the midwest the past couple of days. Finally got connected at about 8:15...sorry you missed the lovely swirl of trash this morning ~ that's right it's trash day and everyone had their cans out by the curb just in time for the 70 mile hr winds! Some of those cans may never find their way home. :) 3 minute updates until the PC leaves so you can catch some of the fun

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008 ~ Just a few updates this morning, the PC has to be out of the office for a while. But the rest of the links will be updating all day ~ And this one goes out to Ms Chuk....It's the birthday of Elvis Aaron Presley today. He was born in Tupelo, Mississippi in 1935 and her life would never be the same. (well as soon as she was born many years later that is) Enjoy the views (and find some Elvis tunes to enjoy too!)

Monday, January 7th, 2008 ~ Today is the 113th anniversary of the earliest copyrighted movie that is still in existence ~ it's by Edison and it's called Fred Ott's Sneeze (it records Fred Ott sneezing comically for the camera). So if you feel like taking a break from online viewing to go to a movie, or to sneeze, please do so with wild abandon!?!

Sunday, January 6th, 2008 ~ The 12th day of Christmas is upon us, and upon the driveway as well! Enjoy watching the snow melt here as it piles up out west ~ and with any luck it will be an enlightening day of viewing all around!

Saturday, January 5th, 2008 ~ And just like that....it's the weekend! Enjoy the views ~

Friday, January 4th, 2008 ~ On the last Friday of last year we were looking for chicks and on the first Friday of this year we've found them! Looks like a beautiful day for the penguins ~ enjoy hopping the links to watch them, the storms out west, and in case you don't think the links here are quite weird enough you can check in on the cheddar cheese we saw "grow up" in front of our eyes that is now in New Zealand!??! (you think I'm kidding don't you? Check the cheese link!) Happy First Friday ~

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008 ~ Welcome to Thursday on the driveway, where today you can watch a few remaining snowflakes come down and the temperatures start to go up, hopefully. (it's 8 outside here at the moment, and probably equally as cold where ever you are too) If you need to warm up a little check out the penguins....its 32 there!

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008 ~ A little bit of new year clean-up on the site....Santa's link was moved to the retired page (you can still watch him) as was the leaf peeping link. In their place, for your consideration are a couple of new links to try out: A bear cub cam by the same folks who do the golden eagle cam, this one also in Finland and the bear cubs are remarkably cute (and seem to sleep quite a bit). The other new one to check out is a Loch Ness cam by day and a UFO cam by night! (did I mention you can't make this stuff up recently?) Penguin chick sightings are getting better and more frequent and if all of that is too much you can always calm down by watching some moss grow, or checking out the new family pages. Whatever your preference, enjoy the views~ A quiz for the first Wednesday of 2008 ~ click here .

Tuesday, January 1st, 2008 ~ Happy New Year!! In celebration today's updates will be every 8 minutes ~ and now on to 2008!
